1. They are....
For all the badmouthing they get around here, movies and music are two of America's largest exports.

Teenagers in Afghanistan may hate America for it's freedoms, LOL, but you know they've seen Titanic. They listen to Michael Jackson. Etc.
Our music/film industries do better for us than our official ambassadors.

I don't think it's the same for sports...they don't even play American football in other countries (do they?).

4. But the movies and music can still exist and thrive...
without some overwrought awards show where a bunch of celebrities verbally fellate one another. I know what I think is a good movie without the Academy telling me, and I bet folks in Afghanistan do too.
