new Barnes and Noble going up practically in my back yard
Seriously. This strip center has been under construction next door to the local mall for some time. We knew Old Nave was going to be there, and some kind of Mexican place, but nothing else. So today I was driving by and there was the Big B/N sign. Which explains why the BDalton closed inside the Mall.

There is a Borders about 1/2 mile or less up the street and a Bookstop. I predict Bookstop will be gone in 6 months.

Now I am still very fond of this particular Borders; it has a very nice ambience. For one thing, the cafe is actually inside the main part of the store, not off in a pod, so it is more like a part of everything that is happening in the store. Plus there are some big comfy couches in the music area (still the best music shop in FW). If the other Borders in FW were the only Borders, I would probably go to Barnes and Noble all the time.

It is going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

I still go to an independent bookstore in my neighborhood-----
I pay more and there is no cafe but I love the little place and hope it's around forever.

They get great authors for readings,(Ian Rankin last week),and I miss nothing about the big chains.

5. Bookstop is not an independent bookstore, just part of a
smaller chain.

The independent bookstore in town was Taylor, and it was dead in the water long before Borders or Barnes and Noble came to town. I think they couldn't compete with BDalton and the other in the mall bookstore chain, which I can't remember the name of right this minute.

The good independent in this town is Connections and it does a fine business, plus HalfPrice and a couple of other booktrader places. I still love my booktrader place. They have cats in the store, named Simon and Shuster.

14. It Downtown Ft Worth, it is part of the Downtown Experience
I don't think an independent could afford the real estate.

4. not complaining, if enought people are actually reading to
support two large booksellers, then I don't object, I was just surprised to see B/N move in so close to the Borders.

This strip center replaced an old run down strip center that was pretty ragged looking, so it wasn't an invasion of commercialism ...that piece of land couldn't be anything but a commercial establishment of some type.

7. Well, if it has to be a big chain bookstore,
B&N is okay.

In my area, there are no indy bookstores, except a used paperback store. No one can compete with the chains. :(

Just be thankful you're getting B&N, and not the horrid Books-A-Million. At least at B&N, the employees know something about books and authors. Books-A-Million is cheap, but has absolutely no atmosphere and the employees don't seem to read at all.

8. We at B&N own Bookstop...
and they'll close soon as the the grand opening. We are much more aggressive than Borders when it comes to closing out the little guys. I would like to say that our competition besides Borders now is Amazon, Walmart, Costco and even supermarkets which used to just sell food. Hell you could get the last Harry Potter on the day it came out at gas stations. It's a dog eat dog world out there.

11. well if it is your own subsidiary, it just makes sense to close it
since it is across the street. I would presume the employees would have the option to transfer to the B&N anyway.

OK wonder why B&N chose to put a store there instead of out on FW west side, where the only competition is Half Price Books, and Borders has no presence...

Oh well. I will enjoy the grand opening, I am sure.

10. One of the neat things I like about living near Santa Cruz, CA--
--is the independent Santa Cruz Book Store.

One of those franchise-type places tried to open up just down the block from them and across the street -- and failed miserably.

12. if I lived in Louisville, I would always go to Hawley-Cooke
to shop. I went to college with the owners, and they have a locally owned bookstore that has been very successful.

13. Where is this?
I usually hit the B&N downtown and then the Saucer.

(but I spend more at the Half Priced Books on Harwood)
