I want to adopt a Chinese baby
Actually, I'm too poor...it costs close to $25K when all is said and done, but I'm kind of looking into it. Anyone know anyone who has done this?

1. A former supervisor of mine and her partner did.
I don't recall the details, but I know it was expensive, not including the flights to China.

2. I know someone who has adopted two kids from China
I'm not sure how much it cost her, but she's a great mother and her kids are adorable and amazing.

3. I've known a few people
who adopted from abroad. One from Russia, one from India and one from somewhere in Eastern Europe - forget where.

It's a hard, expensive, time-consuming process.

Personally, I wouldn't want a chinese baby - I don't speak any chinese. :P

13. if they're a baby, they learn english from you.
if you speak english to them. i'm sure they might have some luck with the chinese language later in life, bc of exposure to it, but they'll have an american accent.

19. HeeHeeHee
My jokes never translate well online, either. :-)

I thought it was funny, though, if it makes you feel any better.

4. I'm in the process of adopting a Ukrainian baby
It does cost about $20K. Here's a good website:

Click on "International Adoptions"

6. I "adopted" a chinese girl through Childreach.
The best 24 dollars I spend every month. I watched "About Schmidt" and it touched me so much I had to sponser a kid.

I wish you good luck!

7. Someone I know just brought her son home
I dont know the exact cost but she said it was mid twenties.

My cousin recently adopted a son from Russia- hers was 22k.

In both cases the children are just amazing. It's a beautiful thing.

It does sting though, that it costs so much money to adopt a child & give them a life they wouldnt have had if they stayed in an orphanage.
In my cousins case he came directly from a Russian orphanage & was drinking bottles of meat milk. The process requires you to fly in for 10 days & pick a child, file the paperwork etc. Then you go home for about 6 weeks then go back for 3 weeks to pick the child up. She was absolutely heartbroken leaving him those few weeks before they could have him.

Aside from the money I see both families really connecting & its great

8. Meat milk?
What the hell is that?

I would be heartbroken, too, to leave the child in those interim weeks! But I really would love to do it.

Thanks - that's inspiring.

11. She said meat was mixed in to the milk
because the children didnt get to eat as often as we would do it here.

She was a little worried that it would be hard to get him onto an American diet but he has really flourished

12. For Ukrainian adoptions, you stay the whole six weeks
You never leave. It's just one trip. So you have to stay longer, but you don't leave the child once you've chosen him. i can't imagine leaving. My trip should be around September or so.

10. I'm not, really, but...
I know that China's "one child policy" has left an unbelievable number of girl orphans in China and I've always felt really sad about that. I guess that's why I'm focusing on China, but I really don't have a racial or ethnic preference.

14. yea, i see what you mean.
i don't blame you for picking china, it's a pretty overpopulated place. they need the help getting all the abandoned/extra children out of there.

i think i'd rather adopt a child than have one myself, if it ever came down to it and i was married and such. (i'm male).

it just seems like it means so much more. otherwise these children never have a good family. i'm willing to give up my "own" children for a child that could really use a family.

16. Me too!
I am 37 and don't really want to be pregnant and I don't really feel that need to have my "own" baby that a lot of people feel. I'd much rather adopt. I actually talked to a woman once who told me (in so many words) that she would never adopt because adopted kids were "broken people." Yes, she was a Republican.

That hadn't occurred to me. I hope you didn't think I was being confrontational.

Best of luck.

22. Lotta kids here in the USA that could use a home... wouldn't cost
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 10:24 PM by radwriter0555
nearly as much.

The children in China are a long ways away.

There are children in your own neighborhood who need to be loved.

Just a thought, not a criticism in any way.

A great way to start is to be a foster parent. It's really easy to get that process started locally.

Here are some kids right around the corner who could use some love...

I like the idea of helping so many kids, instead of just one... it's really cool!!!!
