So I bought my puppy a hoof
He absolutely loves it but the smell of it is totally disgusting. At least it's something he hasn't consumed or destroyed in under an hour.

1. Hooves ARE totally groase.
HippieDog Hank is part Aussie Cattle Dog and goes BESERK in the hoof-and-bone aisle at PetSmart.

I don't know why dogs love to chew on them so much, cause they must taste as bad as they smell ...

7. A less stinky alternative is a horse hoof trimming.
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 09:00 PM by CottonBear
If you have a friend who has a horse ask them to save the hoof trimmings. These are crescent shaped pieces cut off when the farrier trims the hoof. The dogs at the farm where I keep my horse just love them. Of course, they also like to drag deer legs (with hooves attached) out of the woods. Ewwww!

21. Actually, it's not stinky.
The deer died naturally or was a road kill. The dogs also drag out the head and other parts on occasion. However, this is all outdoors. No deer parts go indoors.
There is a large deer family on the farm. When I 'm feeding my filly, I see the 3 does and their 6 offspring in the evenings. There are about 4 bucks as well. They maintain a separate herd. I think they know it's a hunting free location.

2. my guy
only likes the hooves that are stuffed with something. Once he gets it all out, he gives up on it.

But he loves his pig ears.

5. Not as disgusting as those bags of dried pig ears...........
:puke:

My dog HAS to have SOMETHING to chew on...and I like to choose what it is. He destroys soft toys in seconds so I've had to keep a supply of bones, dried skin rolls, ears, etc. on hand. Feels/smells a little like an morgue in the doggy section of the pantry.

13. Without the tails?
I think the cats like gecko tails because they're always missing when they bring the critter in the house.

6. Be careful with those...
they can cause tooth breakage. That happened to Winston, my late cocker spaniel. Pig ears are better, although they are extremely fattening, so I'd give those out sparingly, too!

You're right - they do smell funny, but I got used to it because my dog loved them and I loved him. (Side note: I miss him. :-()

14. Stella and I were in the pet store a couple weeks ago and we went
past a bucket filled with these brown things. She took one whiff and was all "Mom PLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!" excited over the contents. I picked one up and went "Euw. This?" she licked it and wanted to carry it to the cash register herself. This was not an option. I saw the sign. It said "Pork Pumpers!" They were pig hearts. Gack. I got her one, but I had to chop it up. Methinks it would've been 'Doggy Disaster' if I'd let her have the whole thing a once. She's only 10 lbs.
