Time Machine: If you could check out another place & time, what would it be
Time travel anywhere you want - to taste a different cultural period.

For me, maybe early 1960's Europe - like something out of a Fellini or Godard flick.

or see the 1919 Reds play at home. Maybe go watch TR, Wilson and Debs each speak in 1912, then hop back to 1896 to watch Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech.

2. 60's Europe would be good, especially London
But: I'd want to go to California, about 500 years ago, hang with the Costanoans along the Bay, the Chumash in So Cal, see the Central Valley chockablock with marshes and birds and grizzlies, watch the whales wash up on shore, experience what may have been the most biologically diverse place on earth... before the invasion...

6. Paris in the 20s.
Other favorites:

Havana in the 50s.

Any European country in medieval times.

Dinosaur days -- if I could be guaranteed that I wouldn't be prey.

Hawaii 100 years ago.

The antebellum South -- to try to get a feeling for the horror human beings can inflict upon other humans.

Salisbury Plain, England, to see Stonehenge being built.

Egypt 3,000 years ago to watch pyramids being built.

Walnut Creek, Calif. in the 70s to see my sister and myself when we were kids and my parents when they were in their 30s/40s and to see the town back when there still were lots of walnut orchards and horse farms.

8. I'd be very tempeted to try to change history...
go back to the late 40's or early 50's with a good set of historical docs, full 21st century ass-kicking gear and try and nip this nazi infestation in the bud. Call it operation paperclip removal... Otherwise revolutionary era united states would be pretty interesting, maybe I could at least convince Ben Franklin to choose the other sign for the electron charge...

12. Fond as I am of studying several ancient cultures, I would go back to the
time the American nation was being formed. I would bring a big ass stack of print outs about the shit that is going down in the bush* years and ask if there is anyway to avoid letting scoundrels like the BFEE get into power.

I fear, at best, Dr. Franklin would shake his head, say "I told you it would happen" then invite me for a pint.

They were so cool. Every time I see anything on TV about Minoan culture I get this real homesickness feeling, enough to make me wonder if there isn't something to reincarnation.

17. I want to go to the future
I want to see if we survive. That's the first place.
For the second, I'd go back to the 21st of August 1485, the day before the battle of Bosworth Field and have a nice long chat with Richard the Third.

I'd quietly walk in, and use my one opportunity to go back in time to help humanity.

Of course, this leads to the whole "what would history be like all kinds of shit could go wrong as result debate" that I'm just not interested in.

29. The Banquet Years
Title of a book that makes a pretty good case for Paris between 1885 and 1915 as the most creative time and place ever. Painters like Matisse (and Picasso, once he showed up), poets like Apollinaire, composers like Debussy and Ravel and Satie, Diaghilev and the Ballet Russe, and wackos like Alfred Jarry (who wrote Ubu Roi).

Second choice would be San Francisco in the '60s: the Human Be-In, concerts at the Fillmore, dropping really good Owsley acid...

31. England from War of the Roses through end of Elizabeth I
definitely. When I read about that period, I get the homesickness too. Isn't that wierd? I feel like I belong there.

I also have a thing for the entire French/English thing during the Plantagents as well. so maybe i should amend to Franc and England from
Henry and Eleanor of Aquitaine through Elizabeth I

Renaissance Italy, when DaVinci and Michelangelo were both working.

The founding of America, with all those brilliant minds, and where are all the brilliant minds today?

I would love to have known the artists who painted the caves in Spain and France...amazing stuff.

oh yeah and time travel would solve the mysteries of how the Pyramids, Stonehenge, Macchu Picchu, Chichen Itza, the Sphinx, Great Wall were all built.

Spain before the Christians reconquered it

32. I absolutely LOVE medieval English history!
...I'm with ya on that--as long as we don't become plague victims (can we bring our cats and our tubes of Skin So Soft?). Of course, my being a 6'1" female with all my teeth would probably bring out the villagers with torches in no time!

I'd also love to travel back to the Victorian Era, sitting in Speranza Wilde's salon discussing her son's latest play, or hanging out with the Pre-Raphaelites like Rossetti or Burne-Jones. Of course--again---renewing my TB vaccination before embarcation!!!

34. 1900
I'd go back with maps of the entire planet marking all of the significant oil and mineral strikes of the twentieth century.
I'll be rich! Rich I tell you!
And I'd take back technical info on advanced (for 1900) mining equipment, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, aircraft, etc.
By 1950, I'll have permanent base on the moon. By 2005, I will control the galaxy. So long, suckers!

a lot of debate over the exact years but it would be interesting know how everything actually went down and what he really was trying to say and not the garbled junk it seems Christianity wants you to believe... could see if the da vinci code is for real too.
