aarrghghhh!! Elite toolbar hit me today
I don't know HOW! I have ZoneAlarm. I have Norton Anti-virus. I have Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-aware, and CWShredder. My machine is locked up tighter than nun's woohoo.

But at work today, I started getting a LOT of Norton messages saying it had deleted "trojan dropper" and "download.trojan" attempts.

Then my google toolbar was gone, and in its place was something called "Elite" toolbar.

NOTHING would delete the fucker. I ran everything and it was still there. I launched in Safe Mode and ran Norton and it STILL couldn't delete all the files. So I manually hunted each one down and finally got them all.

Then, my sound driver was gone, so I had to go find it on the net and replace it.

ARRRRGGHHH!

1. Congratulations.
That's absolutely the hardest one to get rid of I've wrestled with.

Hint: Search your registry for anything running out of a temp directory. (I'd be more specific, but I neglected to make a note of the exact key. It was sheer luck I came across it.)

2. Norton doesn't get most trojans
Symantec has a lot of info in its knowlege base on safe removal of trojans and other similar pests. A lot of them can't be removed automatically because they adapt to the user OS and don't have unique digital "fingerprints".

I don't have a recent link for this, but about three years ago I had a nasty bunch of trojans, and Symantec had extensive info on all of them.

Good luck with it!

4. thanks
I'll check it out.

But lordy, can't ONE company make an all-encompassing product? Why does it take 5 different products to clean a system?

5. Try the Microsoft Antispyware
download.microsoft.com. I like it better than Ad Aware and Spybot.

6. Do you use Firefox?
I do. I've never heard of someone with that problem with Firefox.

7. Do you have Spyware Blaster
It is recommended by the Spybot S+D people. It is a blocker that goes further than the immunization in Spybot. Here is a link: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

9. Ugh; that sucks..
If you don't have "Hijack This!", I'd get it and run it to see if they are any remenents of the toolbar running. It's freeware, and while it won't delete anything, will tell you if anything out of the ordinary is running on start-up..
