7. Oh, yeah, me too.
I keep setting fire to bums in alleys, in the hopes that one of them will be Waits.

So far, no luck.

I saw him in the Robson Street Chapters a few years ago, and shouted "Hey, Ron Perlman, you suck!" at him from the safety of the upwards-moving elevator.

I've never been more proud of myself.

36. why Stinkin' Park?
Why would a liberal be supposed to like them? For that matter, why would anyone of any political persuasion with any taste in music like them?

Yes, I know that a few years back a kid shot up his high school in San Diego and he was a Linkin Park fan, so some right-wingers including Brent Bozell tried to blame the shooting on the band's music. Now, granted, I'm not into blaming any bands for kids' violent behavior in general, but to blame an utterly cheesy band like Linkin Park in particular is especially hilarious and ludicrous.

17. aw but Anti Flag does mean it -
a friend of mine is related to one of the guys. They are very sincere from what I have heard. Maybe it's more homage than a rip-off. I like the Chicks myself. Don't know much about RAM, I'm not much of a rock-rap fan. I used to love Holly Near.

12. In alphabetical order....
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 12:03 AM by NightTrain
ANI DiFRANCO. She has a beautiful voice, but her music is little more than Nth-generation Bob Dylan.

THE GRATEFUL DEAD. Back in the '80s, I knew a Mohawk-sporting, leather-clad punk rocker with a pin that read, "I'll be grateful when they're dead." That pretty well summed up my feelings, too!

JANIS JOPLIN. I'm so fucking tired of hearing about this woman's "originality." Janis Joplin didn't have an original bone in her body! She lifted her singing "style" hook, line and sinker from at least a dozen different R&B and soul artists, every one of whom could sing circles around her without breaking a sweat. And most of those people are still alive, which gives them another leg up on Pearl!

PETER, PAUL & MARY. The folk music revival of the early 1960s needed a bland face to push it into the American musical mainstream. And boy, did these three provide it!

TOM WAITS. Annoying voice, boring music. Any questions?

14. I liked Janis Joplin myself...
...until I started collecting blues and soul records. Then I became exposed to the original versions of the songs for which Joplin became famous. IMHO, not one of her remakes held a candle to the original!

19. Happy to oblige!

CRY BABY - Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters

GET IT WHILE YOU CAN - Howard Tate (The 1967 original, not the 2002 remake, though the latter's not half bad itself!)

PIECE OF MY HEART - Erma Franklin (Aretha's sister.)

TRY (JUST A LITTLE BIT HARDER) - Lorraine Ellison

my husband likes her, but she gives me a pain.

Natalie Merchant- Loved 10,00 Maniacs, but I find her annoying as a solo.

Cowboy Junkies - I'm still mad about them eviscerating Sweet Jane and choking the life out of it.

44. again, I like some aspects of her voice
but a cloying quality has crept into it. I saw her with the Maniacs before they were popular and she sang with her back to the audience, I think she was very shy. But as a solo, hmmm, I can't really put my finger on it. Like her stuff on Mermaid Ave. with Billy Bragg, I always think, darn why is that on there. MIaaooowwww. ;)

I mainly know them from a friend of mine who is obsessed with them (favorite band of all-time) who has just played me several tracks from various albums. They never did much for me, but I'll have to see if he has those early albums; maybe they'll change my opinion of them.

I can't think of any more, so:

U2, U2, U2, U2.

I have found them to be unbearable since they came out when I was a teen in the 80s.

Oh, ok, maybe I should take away one of those U2s and add Rage Against the Machine as well.

32. Nirvana.
Never did a thing for me. Cobain was a silly spoiled brat, like his wife.

Talking Heads - WAY overrated college pap. Didn't dislike them, just hated how they were made out to be SOOO profound.

Also, I don't hate all manufactured bubblegum pop as I'm supposed to. So what if it's a product? It's written and produced by talented musicians - you just never see them. So what?

There are a few things by U2 that I like, but I think they are pretty overrated, too.

40. Mine:
The Grateful Dead. There apparently aren't enough drugs on the planet to change my mind about their music.

Bruce Springsteen. Tremendously overrated.

Bob Marley, Don't like reggae. Dub, though, is an entirely different story.

There must be others, but those are the first to come to mind, because they get regarded with something bordering on reverence by so disturbingly many people.
