Poll question: what's your favorite episode of the Andy Griffith Show?
The Haunted House--Barney, Gomer and Andy investigate a Haunted House.

Opie, the Birdman--Opie kills a mama bird with his sling-shot and takes on the responsibility of raising her baby birds.

Man in a Hurry--a big city businessman on his way to Raleigh has his car brake down on a quiet Mayberry Sunday and is aghast that he can't get his car fixed until Monday and thus missing an important meeting.

The Pickle Story--Andy, Barney and Opie try not to hurt Aunt Bee's feelings and act like they love her Karocine pickles.

Barney and the Cave Rescue--When a cave collapses, Barney thinks that Andy and Helen are trapped and begins to lead their rescue, but they escaped from a back entrance. They don't want to embarrass Barney, so they go back in and allow him to rescue them.

Convicts at Large--Barney and Floyd go fishing, and running out of gas they seek help from a cabin where three female convcits are holding out. They become their hostages.

Barney and the Choir--Barney wants to sing the solo in the church choir but doesn't have the voice for it. No one wants to hurt his feelings, the episode includes the classic scene where Andy has someone else go behind the curtain to sing while coaching Barney that the microphone is so powerful all he really needs to do is mouth the words (and suddenly this great voice behind the curtain comes out)

Andy on Trial--When Andy gives a big city newspaper editor a ticket and insists he pay it in Mayberry, the editor gets his revenge by having a beautiful reporter pose as a college newspaper reporter to get a story on a smalltown sheriff's dept. Barney is taken in by the beautiful reporter and puffs his role up while saying "Andy runs a slack ship." This gets printed and Andy goes on trial--Barney must come to his rescue on the stand.

Mr. McBeevee--Everybody thinks that Opie is making up knowing Mr. MCBeevee a man who is found far up in the trees and has 12 hands--but he is for real--and not a figment of Opie's over active imagination.

1. I recall an old thread on DU about the bird one. Seems that
people were really pissed that Andy was yelling at Opie about killing the bird, since making Opie feel even worse wasn't going to help the situation.

I liked that show when I was a kid, until it was pointed out to me by a "wiser" friend, who had a big brother, that most of the episodes were more or less Sunday church sermons recast to brain wash kids into being moral. After that it was all over.

3. I don't see that at all.
And Andy didn't yell at Opie, he opened up the window and let Opie listen to the chirping of the baby birds and Opie took it on himself to take care of those birds. I don't see anything wrong with a show which has a little moral message, believe me there are enough shows that go in the other direction. I also don't see TAGS as a show which tried to brain wash kids into being moral. I think Opie was one of the more realistic kids presented on tv.

2. Anything with Floyd in it - that man was a genius
I don't think it's too preachy. There's nothing wrong with being neighborly!

That convict episode was a hoot.

I liked the very first episode, too.

4. The Fun Girls!
There were two episodes with them.
"Hi'ya Doll!"
Also any episode with the Darlings. Particularly when they betrothed Charlene's new baby girl to Opie.
