12. are you a fan of any of the following obscure older UK metal bands?
UFO
Uriah Heep
Diamond Head
Saxon
Raven

Some of them were part of "The British New Wave of Heavy Metal" in the late '70s and early '80s. (All of the bands you named except for Sabbath were also pretty much part of that scene too.)

17. I like Raven.
John Gallagher has one of the best power screams in Metal. The others were a bit before my time and not quite heavy enough for my taste but all the heavy bands of my era (80's) were inspired by them.

8. As far as so-called "world" goes,
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 10:47 PM by drumwolf
mostly South Asian or African, but I like anything that has heavy intricate percussion or trance-like sounds.

As far as western-style pop/rock from non-Western countries go, I must say that Japan produces a lot of great punk bands and also a lot of rather bizarre experimental, noise and quirky pop acts. If you're into old-school garagey punk, check out Teengenerate, Guitar Wolf, and the Registrators. If you want your music more bizarre and F'ed-up, check out the Boredoms, Fushitsusha, Acid Mothers Temple, Masonna, Merzbow, Solmania and C.C.C.C.

ON EDIT: I forgot to add, I've also heard a lot of North African Arab droney music that I like a lot. And to be more specific about African music I like, I'm a particularly huge fan of "Afrobeat," the style of music pioneered by Nigerian legend Fela Kuti which involves fusing traditional West African rhythms with American-style soul and funk.

;)

I see you like the traditional beat with an electronic edge. Have you heard Paula Morelenbaum's new CD on Universal, Berimbaum? It was released in November I think. It's a tribute to Vinicius de Moraes (one of my muse's in life), but it has a BossaCucaNova-like sound. Very cool.

(DU kills my Romanian characters :()

Italian (Articolo 31 doesn't have a lot of songs that I like, but when I find one that's good, it's REALLY good)

Japanese

Chinese

Norwegian and Danish music, uh, not so great. There are a couple bands here and there that I like (e.g., De Lillos), but not a whole lot.

KYO, in French, is very, very good.

I think my second favorite (first being Romanian) would be anything from Kenya or Tanzania (in Swahili - jambo, jambo bwana, habari gani, nzuri sana - :P)

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the MAN.

On edit: UK and other foreign rock/pop doesn't count here, in my opinion, anyway, because there's not enough cultural dissonance for it to be truly "foreign".
