Tomorrow I'm marching to the bank and closing my account.
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 07:55 PM by HEyHEY
Here's why.

I have a cheuqing account and a savings account with them. I put money in my Chequing account only when I need to pay bills. Through what was COMPLETELY my fault, I forgot to put cash in there for my insurance payment. So on the 14th my payment bounced, then again on the 17th. Both times my bank charged me $25 PLUS "Interest" of 50 cents for going over my account for a week.

So, now I'm out $50?

Fuck them, that's it. As I said, yeah it's my fault, but still that is just completely unreasonable. Not too mention, I have NEVER signed a thing saying money could be taken outta my account for ANY length of time if I didn't have enough in there.

3. I had that happen once
I have a checking & savings, and do the same thing that you do. After I forgot to transfer the money & the check bounced, I had the bank put a thing (I think it's called auto transfer or something like that), that if it happens again, the system automatically checks my other account and transfers the money needed to cover the incoming check.

4. Sometimes you can get them to lower what you owe.
You just have to ask. It won't hurt, since it was your fault.

5. Call the bank and ask them to
reverse the charges. I have done that several times and they always do it. Also, you can set up something to draft from savings to checking if it happens again. Of course if your bank sucks, then you're SOL.

15. You must have a good bank!
My ex-bank would never do that, even when it was questionable whose fault it was. So I left.

6. So, you're pissed at the bank because you wrote a check
without any money in your account...which is like taking something w/out paying for it (you were covered by insurance w/out paying for the coverage). Rather than turn you in for theft the bank charged you $25.00 for each time you tried to steal from them. Yeah, definately close your account.

BTW -some banks ask why you closed your last account - and may not allow you to open one if they know it's because you expect them to cover all the checks you write w/no money in your account.

10. There was not intent. So it's not stealing.
$25 is usurious for a first offense, and when the mistake was covered immediately. Must be great to be perfect, never having a cock-up in your financial life :eyes:

This isn't one of those kid/vegan hate threads. Lighten up. You're defending a BANK. In the lounge.

14. No problem
I should have alerted to the sarcasm in my post.

After posting in the lounge all day I feel like I must jump at every chance to insult everyone I can.

(I feel for my husband as we go home from work tonight...he should consider wearing ear plugs!)

:hi:

7. truly, you should find a better bank
At my credit union, they will transfer money from your savings to automatically cover any overdrafting in chequing, or as we call it in Jesusland, checking". There is only a $5 fee for that. Still, you might wanna shop for a deal before you close your account. Then you can negotiate with your current bank for a reduction of fees in order to keep your account. Being able to mention a competitor gives you an edge in such a negotiation.

marching sounds like a lot of work.

Perhaps a nice stroll, or maybe a meander?

9. As a merchant who gets charged $25 for returned checks made out to me...
No offense, but I'm finding it had to sympathize with you too much. Still and all, I like you, but disagree entirely with your position on this issue.

12. well he HAD the money in the bank. They knew that
You get your $25 when the customer makes the check good. Unless, of course they never intended to pay for the item in the first place. That's theft.

18. Correction: I get my money *eventually*
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 05:35 AM by Padraig18
I know he didn't do it deliberately, but the fact remains that until such time as the customer pays for his/her returned check, I am out of pocket $25. No matter which way you look at this issue, I'm completely blameless, yet I'm still penalized.

19. I think a lot of Posters are missing the point.
It's not the fact that Banks charge for an overdraft..it's the ridiculous amount that they charge.
One of my programmer friends who used to work at a Large National bank tells me that overdrafts cost the bank an average of 27 cents per transaction. I'll say it again..27 stinking cents....and they stick the consumer with 25-35 dollar charges...what a bunch of crooks.

21. i had this happen last year!
i bounced one check waiting for a deposit to clear. they withdraw $25, then another check comes in and bounces, because of that fee! and another $25 goes out, totally unbeknownst to me! now i check my balance online keeping a close eye on my account if i'm feeling like money is tight.

my friend's bank CALLS YOU if you're going to bounce a check! why can't all banks do that?!?!?! oh yeah..... they'd be losing a lot of money...... duh....... silly me....

22. Here's my bouncing check story.
When my dad passed in August, my brothers and I divvied up the amount we owed the hospital, et al. One of my brothers sent me a check for $3,000, but I kind of sat on it because I was busy at work, etc.

I finally deposited it about 2 weeks later and went about my merry way. In the morning, I checked my balance and lo and behold, I had a checking account balance of $300,000, plus what I had in the bank.

They had obviously misread the deposit, depositing $300,000 instead of $3,000. Well, being the good citizen that I am, I called them immediately and they removed the $300,000.

The next week, they attempted to remove the $300,000 again when they got the notice from my brother's bank that he didn't have $300,000 in his checking account. (I don't know anyone who keeps that kind of money in their checking account). In the process, they locked up my money for two days. I bounced checks all over God's green earth.

They did, however, make restitution, and it is a funny story, but what a headache. The only person who was not fun to contact was American Express, but they were very understanding.
