on edit - we hang about half of our laundry up to dry- the other half goes in the dryer.

And I feel all guilty that the US is snubbing the Kyoto treaty. I really feel terrible now, whereas before I merely felt pointless.

Actually it's a tossup: terrible or pointless -- which do you prefer?

Just illustrative.

I was just remembering how in Japan (speaking of Kyoto) we had no dryer, and EVERYBODY hung their clothes out on a line, not to mention, we pumped the used bath water (remember Japanese don't use soap in the bathtub, you wash off outside the tub, then soak in it) into the washer to wash the clothes - and you only heat or air-condition the room you're in (and many eschew any climate control). Overall, we used MUCH less energy in Japan - heck, we used cloth diapers, as did many other frugal and/or eco-conscious people.

We are extremely wasteful here. But, that being said, I use an electric dryer.


But I wash and dry all my dishes by hand! :)

6. I live right outside of town in a small house

so I can have a clotheline. I love my bedsheets fresh from the line. There is only one thing I will not put on the line-towels. They stiffen up.

Have you ever smelled fresh clothsline smell? Sheets dried in the sun are just heavenly. Unfortunately, we live in Pittsburgh where it seems to rain approximately 9 out of 10 days.

We had a beautiful day here today (just a little cool, decent breeze). I pulled out all of my sheets, tableclothes, napkins and blankets for a good washing and then drying on the clothesline. My bedding now smells so fresh-better than any fragrance from the store.

Don't feed the robber barons. Use a clothesline unless there is an emergency requiring the use of a dryer.

One of the few reasons why I am happy that I do not live in a city anymore.
That and my vegetable garden.

but even in the city, I hang clothes on a clothes rack. I don't use a dryer. It's a bit inconvenient, but it saves electricity, and it's supposed to be better for the laundry.

It's certainly better for the environment.

I grew up with a clothesline. I used to live in larger towns and apartments, where it was inconvenient to lay out clothes to dry. Now, I live in a rural area, where my daughter has her own yard to run and play in.
We have a ton of veggies every summer and my sheets smell wonderful.
And it does extend the life of your clothing.

13. In my lovely, year old, wonderful DRYER.

I spent several years with only a small, teeny tiny tub washer, and every weekend my place looked like an ancient laundry, with crap hanging everywhere. My towels were exceptionally scratchy.

When we bought our house we had enough left over for a real washer and dryer. Yay!

It's a gas-powered heater that supplies the hot air for drying the clothes.

We don't have gas and clotheslines are not allowed in our neighborhood. When the humidity is low enough, I do pull clothes out of the dryer when they are damp and let them hang to finish drying.
