2. Wilson

He wanted world peace and he wanted it by peaceful means. The ignorant Republicans of his time stood in his way.

3. Wilson

Wilson was a true progressive on most issues and helped accomplish a number of items on the liberal agenda while President, from a progressive income tax to direct election of Senators to the right to vote for women. He is also, in my view, one of the most intelligent Presidents we've ever had.

On the downside, his views on race were backward even for his time, more regressive than many Presidents who had come before him. His push for a world body to promote peace, The League of Nations, was quite admirable and ahead of its time, even if his stubbornness contributed somewhat to its failure. However, the attacks on the basic freedoms that he allowed to occur in the aftermath of World War I tarnish my view of him substantially.
