Does anyone remember "Variety Shows"?
Back when i was a kid it was a big deal to get to stay up and watch Donny and Marie.

Earlier generations had Uncle Miltie, Your Show of Shows...

I'm still a big fan of "Laugh-In"

Except for late night T.V. odd school variety shows have all but vanished...

2. I remember them
Flip Wilson, Sonny and Cher - I loved that format when I was a kid. There were always a number of silly sketches and some musical acts. Flip Wilson did jokes, Sonny and Cher sang. And of course, the best of them all, The Carol Burnett Show.

5. Sonny and Cher another fave!
Even if Sonny was a puke...:puke:

I do remember one episode they showed on T.V. Land in which St. Ronnie guested on. Sonny tried giving him some big award which Ronnie refused to take.

Funny stuff!

3. They were sort of a holdover from vaudeville.
They carried it over to radio and TV. Both evolved into other things, and the variety show died.

I liked variety shows on TV when I was a kid. I wonder if people would watch a good variety show now. Maybe not.

6. Steve Allen, Danny Kaye, Ed Sullivan, "Your Show of Shows"
Carol Burnett

All were wonderful.

Andy Williams had a good one too.

7. Ed Sullivan
was a cultural institution.

I can't imagine a show like his -- essentially a vaudeville review, on which the Beatles and a troop of jugglers might appear on the same program -- succeeding today. The culture is too fragmented now.
