Helicopter rescues Hummer, driver cited
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 10:00 AM by blondeatlast
It took an extreme helicopter manuever to rescue seven people who were in a Hummer that tried to cross the flooded Cave Creek Wash last night.
"We landed the helicopter...on top of the roof of the vehicle, and extracted seven people including three children, ages 9 through 15," says Lt. Paul Chagolla of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

He says the driver had apparently been warned by a citizen not to cross the wash, but thought he could because he had a Hummer.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The man was cited for reckless driving and could have to pay for the costs of the rescue if convicted.

1. Ahem...attention dumbass...your Hummer is a Chevy Tahoe with ugly clothes!
IT IS NOT A SERIOUS OFF-ROAD VEHICLE!!!

I hope a "dumbass penalty" is applied to his fine. Go ahead and release his name too so he can be publicly mocked.

3. Yeah, I live not far from Cave Creek, and I know someone who drives one.
Don't think it's him, but if it is--merciless.

23. Yes, the Hummer 2 is. The original military hmmwv is ~extremely~
capable. In fact, with the fording kit, you can drive the thing while having to hold your breath since it cross rivers that are 6 feet deep.

Unfortunately, this asshole didn't have one of those, he's just another dumbfuck poser, and needs to be billed the full amount of this "rescue" - althought I'd be equally unconcerned if him and his entire family were washed away :eyes:

And I'm hearing lots of guffaws about it here in Phoenix.

2. I am sure it was the fake Hummer
The H2 Hummer is nothing but a glorified Sierra Tahoe.

A real Hummer with a competent driver would not get stuck.

4. Definitely a difference
No one NEEDS a Humvee, which is a true offroad military vehicle. A "Hummer" on the other hand is either a blow job, or a grossly overweight vehicle sitting on a shitty frame. The commercial Hummers are absolute pieces of shit. I love when I pull up to the pumps and see where some dumbshit freeper just paid $75 to fill up their truck (aka penis extension) for the week. Brings a smile to my face.

I did a spit take.

I love poetic justice.

7. "No one needs a Humvee..."
I don't know about that.
Sometimes I dream about having an off the grid, very rural, remote home that requires off roading. A vegtable oil fueled Humvee would suit me just fine!!

9. Ah, but want and need aren't the same
Meaning, I can't think of a situation where a humvee would be the only solution. However, if you took the time and effort to convert yours to a vegatable oil, or even a hemp-based fuel, I'd give you kudos, and I wouldn't have the slightest disdain for you. If you do something like this, please post pics. Would you do it yourself or take it to someone? I just don't think I have the skills.

11. What's cool about a diesel engine is...
it is a multi-fuel engine. It runs fine on vegetable based oils.

Now combine a small diesel, ran on veggy oil, into the hybrid technology and we have got something! And what a great way to use our vegetable oil waste!!

15. Point taken, but you will have to admit
.
.
.

That MOST Humvee owners have no use for them, other than the "image" rush . .

and that B20?

That means that only 20% is "vegtable oil fueled" - as it indicates in your pic, 80% is just regular ole diesel. Volkwagen tested a Jetta Diesel that runs on 100% bio, but it is still in it's infancy/

And the cost - and availability -

Environmentally speaking, ur better off with ethanol, and Foreign auto makers as well some of the big 3 already make vehicles that run on what they call E85, or 85% ethanol. Regular ethanol(which can be used in most vehicles without modifications) at the pumps is around 15%, but not higher.

And you can buy the ethanol almost anywhere, even in my small town in Northern Ontario of around 2000 souls.

Biodiesel: Biodiesel refers to a diesel fuel produced by reacting vegetable oils with methanol or ethanol. Biodiesel is commonly used in a blend with 80% standard diesel fuel, a blend known as B20. Biodiesel can be used in compression-ignition engines with little or no modification.

Biodiesel is physically very similar to regular diesel fuel, and there has been no indication that any materials compatibility issues have arisen with metals used in the distribution, storage, dispensing, or onboard use of biodiesel. Some reports have been provided that biodiesel may cause problems with certain types of elastomeric materials. No special manufacturing techniques are needed for fuel systems for biodiesel vehicles, since biodiesel can be used in most diesel vehicles without making any modifications to the vehicle at all.

No electronic software or hardware changes are necessary to operate a vehicle on biodiesel. In colder climates, fuel heaters may be installed to prevent the biodiesel from gelling.

The biggest drawback to biodiesel is cost. The cost of fuel is determined by the feedstock being used, and the fuel price is estimated at $2.50 a gallon or more due to small-scale production and feedstock costs. Research activities are underway in the U.S. to use biodiesel, especially for urban transit.

/snip/ - more

Kind of like Switters at the mention of the Dulles brothers. (if ya know what I mean!)
Nobody in the city needs one those, for any reason whatsoever.
That's why we are in a war for oil.
So fools can drive around in that shit.

19. We wouldn't want out "standard" of life to be altered..............
would we? The same conspicuous waste of 50 years ago and we're still going strong. THIS is why other countries hate us, we're fucking pigs. It's ALL ours and it's ours NOW!
Quite often I'm ashamed to be a citizen of this country. And yes freeps who are looking in, I AM considering moving to another country. Somewhere sane. My first obligation is to change this country though, so it won't be any time soon.

living proof that these vehicles interact POORLY with your testosterone level..and yeah...POETIC JUSTICE!

(I might also add that developers in Arizona seem to have an easy time getting permits buidling in areas that are VERY obvious flood plains...especially in the Cave Creek/Carefree area)

10. Found a tiny pic here

and a longer article stating the guy could be fined under the state's "stupid motorist law." (OK...there are some things I like about those renegade Arizona maverick types)

Live TV showed children ages 9, 12 and 15, and four adults climbing through the moonroof to be picked up one by one by a rescue helicopter.

Chagolla said the Hummer drove through the washed out road near 5200 E. Cloud Road even though traffic was warned to stay out of the area.

"We will interview the driver, and if he purposefully put themselves and his passengers in danger, we will issue a citation to him," Chagolla said. Under the state’s stupid motorist law, the driver could be responsible for fines and the cost of the rescue.

And they are guaranteed at least one with every heavy rain.

12. The stupidity doesn't rest solely with Hummer drivers here in the desert.
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 11:22 AM by blondeatlast
Anytime we get heavy rains there is always someone who thinks he can pull this stuff off.

You can bet there is always gonna be someone wtih one of those big penis-surrogate trucks stuck in a wash somewhere, sitting on top of his truck, drenched. The local TV LOVES these stories, too.

As far as I know, no one has died yet, so I feel little shame in a laugh at these idiot's expense. Any longtime AZer can tell you what happens in a heavy rain. Also, the Transportaion Dept. and the news media constantly warn people to stay out of the washes or not to drive across them.

I've even seen them rev up to try. People actually pull off and watch to see if they get stuck; it's pretty amusing, actually.

14. Of course..you live in a flash flood area
and everyone with a pea brain knows you don't attempt to cross a wash...the only thing a bigger vehicle will do in that situation is gain more velocity as it gets washed away! (IDIOTS!)

21. They warn us in the media, the DOT posts signs, and these
penis-surrogate driving nitwits do it all the time.

As I said to NSMA, we know it's gonna happen, so people pull off to watch these nitwits attempt it--and they deserve the resulting laughter at their expense. Like the Fire Department has nothing better to do, especially with heavy rains in the desert. :eyes:

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
