3. As a grade school teacher
all of those punishments are asinine. Although I don't understand the "watching my teacher cry" part. Wierd.

In grade school I suffered from:
Starting in second grade...
1) hit on the palm with ruler
2) hit on knuckles with ruler if I continued "bad" behavior
3) Time in isolation by teacher
4) Sent to the office and parents called
5) Spanked with big ass board by principal or coach
6) Detention

Ah hell, you get the idea.

6. Did we go to the same school?..lol
Although I did have one teacher take gum out of my mouth, shove it in my nose, twist it around and shove it back in my mouth. My father punished him though :). That was 7th grade, not grade school.

4. repeated beatings
Until lost all emotional control.
Getting hit in the head by an eraser thrown by a teacher.
Getting transferred out of said asshole teachers class two weeks before intelligence test results were due and having him tell all my former classmates how much smarter than all of them I was which just made my life even more of a living hell.

Ahh, the memories. 6th grade.

7. "the foolishness class...."
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 04:08 PM by mike_c
When I was in fifth grade I was a charter member of the school principle's "foolishness class," a sort of in-school suspension. We spent the day in desks in the hall outside the principle's office, where the bat-eared old crone could hear the slightest whisper or giggle. No reading material, nothing to do for the entire day. We ate at a special "foolishness table" in the cafeteria under some teacher's watchful eye-- he or she was doubtless being punished too. I think I probably still hold the record for attendance-- five weeks straight in the foolishness class for trying to organize a fifth grade student strike. It sounded like a good idea at the time....

on edit-- we got the usual spankings, writing 1000 sentences, standing at the blackboard with your nose in a circle, and so on, too. But the foolishness class is one of my fondest grade-school memories....

8. Does anyone know about the card system?
When I was a senior in high school, I took college classes in the morning at a local college Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursdays, I volunteered helping the kindergarteners. They had some kind of card system. I remember the teacher saying to an unruly child, "Jacob, that's it I'm flipping your card." Evidently that was a bad thing. I never was told or figured out that disciplinary system. Did anyone's grade school or children's grade school have some kind of card system?
I thought that it was sort of funny though. I joked with my sister "No Teacher, don't flip my card, anything but that."

12. The 700 Club punishment
I went to a Catholic school for a while where many teachers did what they called the 700 Club punishment. You had to write on a piece of paper 700-2=698 698+1=699 699-2=697 until you got to one. Luckily I only had to do it once.

17. We had to copy entire pages of the dictionary.
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 04:44 PM by notmyprez
One time, the whole class got punished for who knows what and everyone had to copy five pages that night and bring them in the next day. And these dictionaries had big pages and small print.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about this one until I saw someone else's mention of copying sentences. I can remember one in particular: for chewing gum, having to copy the sentence, "I will not masticate colloidial substances in class." (Well, I suppose it was original.) I bet that today's teachers wish that kids chewing gum in class was all they had to worry about.
