Anyone here use Netflix?
Can you get a movie guaranteed on a certain day? If not, I don't see the appeal! I want a movie when I want a movie goddammit.

1. I do...
Ummmm, you can't *really* get it guaranteed, but usually pretty close.

IMO, it's a great system, but if you're a browser type, who likes to go to the video store and look around and get something to watch that night, then it wouldn't work very well.

Anyway, I love it...

2. I use it for the kids
it takes a day or two in the mail. But they go out to the site and put the movies they want to see in a queue. Netflix sends out 3 at a time. So if they mail a movie on Monday, we get it on Tue or Wednesday as soon as they are returned the send out more. So it depends on how diligent the kids are in returning them how many movies they will get to see in one week

3. I love it too - you gotta find your Netflix groove
You can control what movie comes next, but no one can guarantee when the post office will deliver it. But once you get the rhythm you will know when you'll get something, plus/minus a day. I usually alternate my movies by genre - I'll have a drama, a thriller and a comedy, and I rearrange them at the last minute depending on my mood. It's so much better than big crappy chain movie stores.

5. Plan ahead. Juggle your list. They do not read minds
How it works: You have a list where you put the films you want. You can arrange the list and rearrange the list, changing the order of which films come next. By using your brain, you can usually get a movie to come about when you want it. They email you when a returned DVD is back and they send the next one, and they put the expected date of arrival in the email so you know when to look for it. I juggled our list in the weeks prior to a visit from my daughter so certain movies would arrive when she was here and we could watch them together.

Nice thing about it is no need to rush to watch if something comes up. I can return them anytime. I live a LONG way from any large movie selections for DVDs so Netflix offers me great selection which I could not find otherwise. If you want a movie at the drop of a whim and are close to a big store, that might work better for you.

6. we've used them for over a year
and love it!

we usually drop the watched movies in the mail on Mondays and by Fri-Sat have 3 news ones in our mail box. The only "problems" we had getting movies for the weekend on time is if there is a holiday during the week and the post office is closed

cheaper than our local rental places, more selections -- and no late fees

7. For me the appeal is the wide selection
I have HBO and SHO and On Demand (way cool!) so I have access to a whole bunch of good stuff via cable, and I've been considering dumping NetFlix -- but they do have some stuff that you just can't get otherwise.

So, I'm keeping it for now.

The turnaround is incredible for me; I drop the DVD in the mail and the next morning I get an email saying they've received it and are sending a new one, and often I get it the next day.

8. I love it, and you can have three on hand at any given time
(unless one or two are in transit) so you have something for every mood. Plus they arrive so fast, it's amazing. If you are an extreme "instant gratification" type it may not work for you. But otherwise, with a little bit of planning, you can always have a movie or two on hand that will tickle your fancy. I think it's worth it not to have to give stupid Blockbuster any of my money.

9. Love it
I've had netflix for 4+ years now. I hate browsing in the video store. I always forget what I want to see. With netflix I can add movies to the queue whenever I get the urge to - like if a coworker mentions a good movie, then I can go back to my desk and add it to my queue. Now they have Netflix Friends, where you can see what your friends recommend and add it to your queue.

10. I use it, but you are asking too much. Perhaps you should consider...
Blockbuster, because they offer you two in-store free rentals with your subscription to their mail service.

Delivery depends upon proximity to the local shipping center. I only live two hours from mine, so I always have next day delivery.

For me, the appeal is the selection. I spent my first month with Netflix just watching the movies the local Blockbuster and Hollywood Video stores don't carry.

14. One thing you might want to think about:
According to Buy Blue, based on political contributions:

Blockbuster has a 40% rating,

Netflix has a 72% rating

15. You still like them after they fined you?
Almost everyone has a brick-and-mortar Blockbuster horror story.

19. Blockbuster has NO MORE LATE FEES ;)
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 05:07 PM by leftyandproud
I did get a fine once for a video 2 days late, but kept putting it off..asking them if I could pay next time. I rented about 10 more movies from them that way, and they finally deleted the charge from my account. hehe ;)

now as I understand it, you get to keep movies/games for two entire rental periods without paying a late fee. One day after that however, and they bill you for the full cost of the product.

13. blockbuster has an
"all you can watch" plan of your own. 2 or 3 at once, return at will. a good deal if you have the time to watch the movies, which is where i fall down.

16. I return mail back all three on Monday, get my next three by thursday.
I go through a lot of movies, so I am on a pretty regular schedule. Generally when you drop on in the mailbox, the next one in our queue arrives three days later. I always, always have movies laying around that I want to watch, so I think it is great.

18. Love Netflix
great way to catchup on old TV shows...I've rented the first couple of seasons of CSI and Arrested Development. Without commercials, old TV shows are the perfect quick escapism. You can get exercise DVDs, too. No problems with delivery or charges.
