Poll question: Ohio City you'd most want to visit....if you had a free trip:
Ohio..Seven Citys in Search of a State...

If you won an all expense paid trip to an Ohio city, which one would you pick?

9. well then I'd go to Cleveland
if they didn't cancel the More Than Music fest again.

Otherwise I'd go to which is closest to Indianapolis so I could go to Dude Fest.

4. Cleveland. Six words.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I believe the Springer show is taped in an obscure Ohio city known as "Chicago" :-) , though Springer himself is from Cincinnati.

7. actually, your choice is good..for other reasons...
Cleveland is actually a fairly interesting "gritty city". There are still some old ethnic neighborhoods, and the Cuyahoga River is turning into an entertainment district.

and yes, the Short North is well worth a visit, as is German Village and the Columbus zoo. But Cleveland has more of a full day or two worth of stuff: The Art and Natural History Museums, Severance hall, the rock and roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland zoo, the metroparks system, ethnicities of all sorts, and good restaurants to go along with. It's an East coast city in the midwest. :-)

Say it ain't so!! It's obviously been a few years since I've been to downtown. Do they have any presence in Ohio these days, or will I be forced to drive six hours to the Loop?

Actually, my niece lives in Chicago and slips me a box or two every now and then.

On Edit: They Buckeyes are still in Columbus, right?

15. believe it or not I actuall went to Youngstown ON PURPOSE...
...as a tourist.
(but i stayed in Akron).

I heard so much about the steel industry shutting down there, and then i found out they had a museum on the industry that had recently opened, so I made a point of visiting the Mahoning Valley.

Youngstown actually has some nice neighborhoods....and some highrises downtown.....sort of blew my stereotype of the place out of the water.

I unfortunatly missed the art gallery, which I found out later has a real good collection of American art.

16. The mill museum was ACTUALLY open?
You usually have to call to see if anyone's there...

The Butler Art Museum is GREAT! You should check it out some time. Last time I was there they had photos by Steven Stills and original caricatures by Al Hirschfeld. They have a new theatre with digital projection and 7.1 sound. They don't use it much, but the director (a friend) let us go in and put The Matrix DVD on!!! DAMN!!!!!!!

How long ago did you go? It's (the city) pretty bad now! I get off the freeway and want to turn around for Indy!!! Although I MAY be leaving here soon, due to the fab economy!!!

Rick

I think maybe we are talking about two different museums...

This is the one that I went to:

http://www.ohiohistory.org/places/youngst/

..its one of the best industrial museums I've seen. ..it was worth the trip.

The mill museum you might be thinking of the one in that partk on the south side of town...

20. That's the one...
Up on the hill overlooking downtown. It's still open, but it has really odd hours. Great building, however...

Besides the Butler Art, there is also the Arms Museum, next door, with a great collection of vintage 'arms.' Swords, old firearms, that kind of stuff...

And I will say that the Youngstown Symphony is GREAT! It's only $25 for great seats in the restored (originally) Warner Brothers theatre, built by them in the 20's so their family could see their movies!!!

Yep, they were from Youngstown... But, when WB wanted to do something to memorialize them, the city 'mob' (politicians AND bidnessmen) demanded so much that WB used the second theatre they built, in New Castle, PA, for their purposes.

I had a business in Ytown and I can tell you the corruption is SO RAMPANT that you'd need to nuke the place to clean it up!

that would be easy to do. Dayton/Cinicinnati or Cleveland/Akron.

Or you could

Cleveland/Akron/Youngstown.

Yes, I know, they dropped the exclamation point (I think).

It's my hometown where I was born and lived for the first 10 years of my life. Last time I was there was 2 years ago. Still have a few relatives there although most are still back down in SE Kentucky, where about 20% of Ohio citizens come from. :)

34. Cleveland
I'm a displaced New Yorker (now many years ago) came out to Cleveland to go to school and stayed -- It has the finest symphony in the US and certainly one of the top 3 in the world with one of the finest halls as well; one of the finest art museums in the US too, also the largest active theatre district outside of NYC (really), a tremendous cultural scene, not to mention a great academic community as well. Also the Rock and Roll hall of fame for those so inclined. Remarkable ethnic diversity and beautiful parks and natural advantages. Visit in the spring, summer (hot) or autumn though.

Cleveland is a crumbling city.. there is a small renewed downtown area that most nobody can afford to live in, the rest is just a decrepid mass of potholes, slum housing and pollution.

37. yes Cleveland
With respect -- I certainly can't agree since it appears that you're not talking about the same Cleveland I live in -- The description I gave is what it is. Having grown up in NYC area (with all its cultural advantages) and having seen the remarkable change in Cleveland from the "roll-up-the-sidewalks-at-night" place it was 30 years ago to the place I described, I can only more strongy recommend it for a visit.

Makes that town more worthy than say Youngstown Ohio.

And is corny as this post is (like who would want a free trip to Ohio), I did actually vote for Cincinnati because my favorite team is still the Cincinnati Reds - so I could go watch baseball (provided that the trip is during the 81 days that Cincinnati has a home baseball game!
