Jazz organist and all around funkster Jimmy Smith dies.

He revolutionised the jazz organ.

I'm going to miss him.

Geez - I was hanging out with him at the jazz conference just last month!

7. Damn. I saw him a couple of years ago.
Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. He was old. I mean ooooooold. He walked onstage in tiny, old guy steps. 'Course, his hands were a completely different matter. But he was old.

8. Yeah. My conversation with him last month was...
...kind of surreal.

me: Hey Jimmy!
him: Huh? What's that??
me: Mr. Smith! How are you doing tonight?
him: Yeah! That's right!

It got a little better from there, but not a whole lot.

First time I met him, I was 18 or 19. Approached him for an autograph and he laughed and said: "You want my autograph? You're gonna have to pay me!" I chuckled and said: "You're good, but you're not that good!" At this point he shoved my hand my front pocket and started feeling around, saying: "I know there must be some money in there somewhere!" :spank:
