We here in my part of Indiana call it Kentuckiana. I guess Kentucky is the gold standard for backward states to ridicule.

2. Michigan, obviously!
It means "Great Water." It's such a great name that at least half the states in the country (including Illinois) have a Michigan Avenue.

3. has to be a state people can actually spell
Virginia is cool cause it's a girl's name. Ohio is cool cause it sounds Japanese. Hawaii is bitching cool.

Any state where they had to use a North or a South is uncool cause it means there is one too many of them.

13. New York
Say it twice and you name the coolest city.

Actually I used to think Maine, where I grew up, had the dorkiest name, but then I found out that no one really knows why it's called what it's called. Some say it stands for "mainland." Some say it's named in honor of Maine, France. (Then why isn't called Nouvelle Maine, or New Maine?) But no one knows for sure who started calling it Maine and why.

When they'd seen the gates of glory and the fire down below
The many great decisions of the people in this place
You could tell the strength within them, you could see it their face

30. You'd never guess based on Bush, but the word 'Texas' means 'friends'
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 05:49 PM by Richardo
...or 'allies'. How's that for irony? :eyes:

(tejas, tayshas, texias, thecas?, techan, teysas, techas?) had wide usage among the Indians of East Texas even before the coming of the Spanish, whose various transcriptions and interpretations gave rise to many theories about the meaning. The usual meaning was "friends," although the Hasinais applied the word to many groups-including Caddoan-to mean "allies."

Illinois is nice too, but the silent "s" at the end is irritating, and it's cold here! lol
