Tolerable Conservative Writers....
Okay... for my Non-Fiction class... we need to read and keep notes on two columnists. She encourages us to use two with opposing view points

I got Molly Irvins.... now I need a umm... conservative writer.. and want to know if you all have any suggestions. my teacher try to suggest me one.... but I don't really want to use Ann Coulter.. so ummmmm anyone you think that can be stomachable for a whole semester :)

2. I'd pick a dead one.

Ayn Rand as a whole summarizes the conservative mentality so well.
Besides this day in age, it's better dead than red with me.

Edit: I reread your post. You need a columnist. No help with a living one.

3. George Will is still readable
He's gone neo-con to some degree, but he still has his roots firmly in traditional conservative thinking. He writes with a pretty clear focus most of the time, and he doesn't rant and rave incoherently like Coulter.

Yes, he's xenophobic, but no conservative columnist is more insightful.

11. It's frightening that I find myself agreeing with Pat much of the time
as it relates to bush*Co's war and economic policies. That why I posted AmCon above. They also had an opinion piece by Scott McConnell endorsing Kerry for Prez.

And he does say things I also agree with occasionally. Though at other times, he pisses me off!

9. Did your teacher actually suggest Coulter?
Molly Ivins is quite moderate, who occasionally attacks Dems or their misgivings. I would suggest avoiding those who write for the National Review or the Weekly Standard. Molly thinks for herself (and is extremely talented), so it won't do her any justice to "balance" her with bushy Yes-men.

13. Yes she suggested her
The Teacher also thinks Irvins is a good choice though. She just prefers we do it from both sides. We don't have to agree or even like it. Just read columns and write down what we think about their writings, the way their present their view and such etc. etc.

17. don't pick coulter, she's not even remotely thoughtful, nor does she
inspire thoughtfulness. I am reluctant to say it, but there are a plethora of thoughtful conservative writers that would help you not only consider other ideas, but strengthen your ability to counter them if you do your homework.

14. he's not really conservative, he seems non-partisan
I would say he is a moderate and he limits himself to discussion on foreign affairs most of the time.

12. A softball, a hardball
Softball: Andrew Sullivan senior editor for The New Republic, and who was for Bush right up until the gay thing, but he's still a tolerable conservative.
http://www.andrewsullivan.com/

A hardball: Charles Murray, who was showcased on C-Span yesterday. He works for the American Enterprise Institute and has been called one of the most dangerus conservatives of our time, however, I found myself agreeing with many of his principles wrt the educational system and cultural issues in America. Tolerable only because he's so stupid it's hilarious.

The guy comes off as a white supremacist, even though he's not white. He's xenophobic, even though he's an immigrant.
