Ok, the situation isn't the greatest here in the good old US of A. But I honestly don't believe it warrants "we're all gonna die" rhetoric quite yet. Am I imagining things, or has anyone else noticed this too?

on edit: the reason I say this is that I tried to post a thread expressing my hope and optimistic impression that the worst is over, and of the replies I did get, the majority were "you poor simple fool, the world is ending, didn't you realize?" I have seen this in other threads that weren't mine as well.

4. Well, it's a healthy mix of "OMG OMG OMG! We're doomed!"

and "I KNEW it! I KNEW we were doomed!" with a sprinkle of "The US is PURE evil" and a cherry of "Why can't we be more like the EU"

I hate the black/white breakdown. To think that any part of the EU is perfect is as ignorant as thinking the US is perfect. To effectively learn from our mistakes, we need to recognize them. I love England. I would love if our country were more like England in the seperation of Church and State and with a greater role of the state in taking care of the citizens. I also think the country has far better press and the balance between parties is far superior. But to pretend that they don't have their own problems there is ridiculous. Ask any people who happen to hail from Pakistan how they are treated.

We need to evaluate what are the best points of societies around the world and decide how to incorporate them within our own. We can't just say "We-bad, they-Good". It's the coward's way out. It's saying that we may as well give up because we are automatically inferior and that's just not true. If you took an American and a European and switched them at birth, the European would grow up as ignorant as an American and the American would think the U.S. were absolutely crazy.
