Poll question: did your high school have a smoking area for students?
Mine did, though I beleive it's gone now... seemed like a great idea when I was a student, but looking back it seems a bit odd..

2. Niskayuna (NY) High School, 1960's
You had to have a note from your parents to use them. They were outside, between wings of the school.

Only the 'hoods' used them.

6. 1980's for me
in Virginia... no note was needed though

it was kind of like all the preppie kids hung out in the courtyard in front of the school, all the 'cool' kids hung out in the smoking area in back. It was kind of similar to a courtyard, between two of the school's buildings

13. Yeah
The smoking lounge. It was the early 80s and it seemed better than the kids using the bathrooms. The year I graduated they asked me to be on the Smoking lounge committee to come up with what to do for the next year. the year after I left they started having the 9th graders going to that school so they needed new rules. I came up with putting an "S" on their school IDs and that's what they did.

21. Yep.
Early 70's. It was an indoor smoking lounge that used to be some sort of Phys-Ed room.

The main reason cited for having the lounge was that the "powers-that-be"
thought that the image of students loitering out doors on the steps looked bad.

24. Yes but they got rid of it while I was in HS
We had several of them, IIRC.

I remember how "grown up" I felt starting HS and seeing all those kids being allowed to smoke in those designated areas between class and during lunch.

Smoking was no longer allowed by my senior year, though.

25. A shed in the back parking lot.
It's like they WANTED ua to smoke pot.

Upon registration a parent had to sign if you were allowed to smoke. Then you'd have a box checked on your ID and could go out to the shed. My dad signed mine. He said he wanted it to be my choice, and he didn't want to prevent me from hanging out with friends who smoked.

This just seems crazy now!

26. Yes, the upscale Chippewa Valley had a "smoking patio" located off
the 1/4 mile walkway between the East and West buildings. Only problem for smokers was that we had exactly 8 minutes to change classes and if you had to walk from East to West there was no time for a camel. That walk was hell. The "patio" is gone, and the East building has now become a middle school, while the West was enlarged to accomodate the loss of space from the East. They originally planned them to be separate high schools, but felt that rivalry of two schools located 1/4 mile apart would be too great. How stupid of an idea was that? Oops, sorry I got off the subject.

On an interesting note, this is the high school that the show "Freaks and Geeks" was based upon. The creators went to school there. :hi:

34. Sure, it was called outside.
We're talking 1970- 1975 here. If you were outdoors you could smoke cigarettes. As a stoner I smoked more and no one really seemed to care.
