What musician should get a film biography?
This past weekend, I was able to rent "Ray", a decent (and yes, Jamie Foxx should win the Best Actor Oscar. A superb performance) film biography of Ray Charles' life.

My question: what other musician/performer should get a film biography?

2. Jerry Garcia :)
And not only because I love his music, I just think a movie about his life in particular would be a pretty fun tale to tell. Hell, I'd be happy with a well made movie about the whole Haight-Ashbury/San Francisco music scene from say . . . '64-'72 or so :)

25. Huh? he says, before scrolling down to catch the smiley
You see The World According to John Coltrane? That was pretty good, iirc. What about Saint John Coltrane?

I haven't seen anything to tell even close to a fraction of the story of the man and his music.

Could you imagine using up 2 hours of your life for THAT? :-)

But they'd probably really screw it up, so in that case, I'd prefer a bio not be done.

11. Roky Erickson
and a biography of him would have a lot of other interesting people connected to it, such as Janis Joplin and Doug Sahm.

Also I'd vote for Joe Strummer as well.

13. Beethoven
Especially since some the information seems to point to his being gay - or Tchaikovsky.

I think a bio of a famous in the closet musician would be interesting in light of all the right wing gay hate we see today.

29. Yeah: Straight, No Chaser
I think Eastwood only produced it...great nonetheless, but I thought the original poster was referring to something like "Ray", where it's an actor playing the role....

But to satisfy, Duke Jordan or Jimmy Smith would be deserving of a biopic/Jimmy Smith, especially Jordan, who is an excellent pianist, and I think for part of his life spent time as a taxi driver?

30. You're Right. I Meant To Say Produced
And, you're also right, in that it's not a biopic. It's more a documentary since Monk is actually in the movie throughout.

But, there wasn't really a terribly high amount of drama in Monk's life. I think his intrinsic weirdness might have caused some internal pain, but he was widely accepted for his genius very early on, had plenty of friends and was not a routine victim of rampant racism. Not sure that would make a good movie.

I'd go with Jordan, but i wouldn't care to see a movie about Jimmy Smith. I have never found his music all that interesting. Nothing not to like. Just nothing to really glom onto.

I'd watch a movie about Tal Farlow, Django, or Charlie Christian, though.
