best jamming band
what's the best band at jamming? you know, the ones that can go on stage and play a song that usually runs 4 minutes for 10-20 minutes.

my votes go to grateful dead and the Pat Mcgee Band.

5. And similarly the Allman Brothers
(with the common element now being Derek Trucks, but many old jams are great as well) :-)

11. I know you said they are your faves
but objectively is Widespread Panic worth seeing in concert?

12. If you like their studio stuff
it's even better in concert. If you don't like them much to begin with, don't bother.

But I haven't seen them since Mikey left us. Then again, the dead isn't quite the same w/o Jerry.

If you don't like their music to begin with, you won't like it any better live.

16. Don't forget Little Feat. Most of the bands other posters
have listed would credit them. Nothing like chops learned from nearly 40 years together on the road.

20. I've never seen Mike Kennealy on his own
but damn that guy is talented! Is he really a "jam" type-guy now? I gotta check that out!

But otherwise I'd say the Allman Brother's for lengthy loose jams, but Little Feat is UNSTOPPABLE. They are a little more concise than a lot of Jam bands, but every note is just perfect.

24. Who did you see him with, Frank, Dweezil or Vai?
Of course, the jamming is still in the context of his own particular songwriting style, but the MKB is a monster when it comes to collective improvisation.

That's what the music is all about. Forget about bands like Phish and the Dead.

22. Is that considered a talent?
Why not just stop the song where it's supposed to stop? What are you adding by playing the song over and over.

23. it can be
some musicans, esp jazz musicians can go on incredible riffs and solos. other times, those bands are great to have on in the background or go to see and have a good time with friends.
