18. I have been in the Chapel of the Holy Shroud

I was studying at the School of Architecture in Turin in the 1980's. I went off on a sightseeing tour/architectural study with a colleague who was a Muslim.

We went into the old part of the city and stumbled upon the chapel. By pure chance there a mass was being held. We went in and stood at the back after looking at the shroud, which is on the left-hand side when facing towards the altar. Infra-red beams protected the case within which it was displayed.

The singing and chanting was hypnotic. Afterwards, we discussed the power of the mass. Our conclusion was that the church must have exercised considerable control over a largely ignorant, and superstitious populace. Both of us were postgrads and not exactly stupid. That notwithstanding, we concurred on the power, and atmosphere, created in the chapel during the mass.

The same sense of overpowering awe must have applied in the great, medieval cathedrals of western Europe, buildings that are regarded as massive even today. Moreover, the lack of mechanised plant to build such edifices must have wowed ordinary people even more back then. To the average, medieval citizen the sense of awe must have been overpowering.

Curiously, the chapel is in a seedy part of Turin. We wandered into a square, not far from the chapel, and encountered junkies hanging around in it.

As an aside, we had a good shifty at the architecture commissioned during the Italian fascist era in the city centre. Once again, the purpose was to inspire awe. It was impressive, eg massive giant orders, but it was not good architecture per se. We noted similarities between the Italian fascist architecture and the pompous designs of Albert Speer.
