Tim Curry reading "Lemony Snicket and the Carnivorous Carnival"
Delicious! If you listen to audio books, you must check this one out. I thought he might overdo, but he is dead on perfect.

How can you be laughing with chills going up your spine?

2. I've heard good things about it
Seems to be compared to Harry Potter a lot. Can you give us a (non-spoiler) synopsis?

4. It's a series about three orphaned? children who are searching
for one of their parents, rumored to be alive. I've heard the comparisons to Harry Potter, too, but Lemony Snicket is much, much darker with a very wicked sense of humor. There really is almost nothing to compare the two; Snicket is downright macabre MOST of the time, HP occasionally so.

LS is the pseudonym for Daniel Handler, who writes some very dark humored books for adults as well.

Not for delicate types, but if you like a taste of the macabre with a dose of very wicked humor, you'll eat it up.

FWIW, I have tried to read one of Handler's novels (Basic Eight), but I haven't gotten far. I much prefer the adventures of the Baudelaire children. BTW, loads of literary references in his books, too.

6. I love his writing style ....

I don't know if anyone here has read Beverly Nichols ("The Tree That Sat Down") or some of the early Tanith Lee books (e.g. "The Dragon Hoard") -- but the snarky commentary is kind of like that, only cranked way up! The author is writing "in character" and it really shows. Generally more cynical than Harry Potter -- if you have kids who are getting into that "critical" phase, or are budding smartasses who appreciate irony, they might like Lemony Snicket.

Tim Curry was a great choice -- playful personality, and definitely into literature (I think he's the one for Jerome K. Jerome's classic "Three Men in a Boat" to be made into a film).

7. Actually, the author has been the reader on the other tapes, and he
is just as good. But Curry is really enjoying himself as he maybe never has. His accents and the characterizations of the different characters are astonishing.
