What did everyone miss from the days of September 10, 2001 and before,
before IT happened that is, was it being able to fly / travel on a civilian jetliner and (a)possibly not be restricted in the number of "carry on" bags you could take with you, (though even beforehand, you may have been only allowed 1 bag of that type, I don't know ), (b) be more able to move about on the plane and even be able to check out the flight deck or even (c) be able to even fly with your pet in the cabin more easily (though some airlines may not have allowed that even beforehand on account of passengers with allergies or other "health concerns.")

I myself missed how life seemed simpler and how everyone could just go about their lives without worrying too much about whether or not those "darn terrorist SOB's" would attack or not.

1. I miss a few things too
I miss not worrying about what hell hole our soldiers will be sent to die in for some corporations profit. I miss the office of the Presidency not being able to rescind a person's Constitutional rights on a whim. (right now, an american is sitting in a cell somewhere, held without charges, with limited access to a lawyer, and no contact with his family...name escapes me, damn Corona, he's been like this for over a year now, hoping a DUer will tell me his name)

I miss the federal government not having an agency called Total Information Awareness.

But most of all, I miss not having most of the worlds derision directed my way.

2. Bet you missed this or a
certain President who was able to provide *TRUE* "HOMELAND SECURITY" without the damned "color coded terror alerts." He did it more competently too in my estimation.

3. This goes back to before 9/11
I miss trusting my government.
I miss loving the American Flag. (definate flag fatigue from abuse and over use connected with lying and killing for political ends)
I miss believing in a 'free press'.
I miss faith in a blind justice.
I miss faith in God.

All because on 12/12/00 the USSC acted like a bunch of two bit partisan political hacks.

4. A lot has happened
I remember telling my 10 year old son at the time that life would change dramatically for all of us. He reminds me now that in his eyes, absolutely nothing has changed. In my eyes, though, everything has changed. We weren't just hit by the planes on that awful day; all our freedoms were attacked, and our nation has been shocked and manipulated into complete allegiance behind the very flawed administration that failed to properly perform their jobs. Where are questions and I'm anxious for the answers. And they all praise the criminals, the mass murderers. When do we wake up from this horrible nightmare?

5. I miss being able to tap into what the Gov is up to.........
as a WHIM and a hobby rather than as a dire, do-or-die daily "better keep tabs on these arses" type of thing.

I don't want to follow this crap on a daily basis! And I resent it. It pretty much makes having a respresentative govtal system moot!

11. I miss...
Tucking my children into bed at night.

My family being together, me and hubby still married, living in Oly.

My friends still being married.

Not having to think about cancer except in the abstract.

Getting carded for lottery tickets.

Co-owning a business.

Publishing a paper zine.

My sense of hope, slight though it was.

Now, these losses don't directly relate to 9/11; but in my mind it all blends together: there was the Nineties, when I was a young successful mother with a good marriage and a generally happy life; and Everything After, when it all fell apart.

12. I miss my 10 or so friends who died there
I miss waking up in the morning and not seeing the twin towers out my bathroom window.
I miss the observation deck.
I miss the days when you never saw a machine gun on the streets of NYC.
I miss carrying stuff in a backpack free of hassle.
I miss carrying a pocket knife.

and oh, sooo, much more, that I can't even list them all.

13. I probably also miss
Edited on Wed Jul-16-03 08:20 PM by Valerie5555
not having to go to a certain cat lover's specialty shop to fill my need to give a cat a "purr session" (since my Midnight was still "alive and meowing and purring" LONG before September 11),the time where people could keep pets without having to factor in things such as "crisis planning" for the animals in question, as well as being able to pretty well mail things to whoever and whereever I wanted without dread as to the implications like there being no guarantee that the things I send would even get to the intended recipients (and had I known then what I knew now, <big sigh>, I would have tried getting a response of some sort from people like BILL CLINTON when he was still able to carry the title PRESIDENT.).

On edit I bet everyone missed having a President who was not inclined to be like some ambassador who was likely to dare any renegade groups to "bring them on" in terms of embassy attacks.

On double edit, what I meant by that was I bet everyone missed having an American President who was not so inclined to "egg on" and provoke terrorists with his remarks.

15. And as a fellow Canuck
when the US envoy made you wish the Canadian gov't would chuck him out on his "persona non grata" butt especially if he made any remarks that rubbed some Canadians the wrong way about "not taking the struggle against terrorism too seriously."

also...honestly maybe I'm just an idiot... but I still feel my chances of falling prey to terrorist attack are slim to nothing, even when flying domestically (haven't gone out of the country in about 10 years)... maybe I'm nuts. But I HATE the change in tone that has happened in this country. Yes things started getting ugly years ago... but boy did they get ugly after 9/11

24. I miss being shocked by the sight of police with automatic weapons
-- in airports, for example. (Went to Europe and saw guards with submachine guns on the streets etc., and thought, "I want to go home!")

I'm sorry for our soldiers who were killed by the US bomb in Afghanistan. (And I know there will be more casualties after we deploy there this summer.) And I'm sorry for the dead Afghans, Iraqis, Americans, and British ... and the dead reporters and aid workers.

I miss the way everyone, Americans and others, exchanged jokes about Bush's latest flubs without a thought for "disloyalty" or "America-bashing".

I miss how bizarre phrases like "they hate us for our freedom!" would have provoked incredulous laughter.
