That may be the one I am referring to in the post below.

Besides, they are Canadian, and Canadian conservatives are centrist/moderate/liberals in America, lol.

3. Nugent.
Yeah, he's a dick, but I loves me some "Stranglehold."

Rush? Why? Because of that goofy-ass 20 minute Ayn Rand song cycle like 25 years ago? Later stuff seemed a lot less rightward.

11. Nugent...anything before Wango Tango.
I mean, Wango Tango is when Nugent really started SUCKING.

I wonder, was the rumor true that he fired Derek St. John (is that the right name?) because he played better that Nugent?

Anyway, when I was younger, I had double live gonzo, a Amboy Dukes album (can't even remember what it was.. journey to the center of the mind), the original Ted Nugent solo thing and cat scratch fever. I never thought he could hold a candle to ritchie blackmore, but I enjoyed his stuff on some level.

Funny that the Nuge doesn't actually sing it - that must be why I like it, as opposed to his other "solo" stuff.

5. Rush, yes
Despite their Ayn Rand fixation, in the 90's they did write a compassionate piece for AIDS victims, can't recall the song now. I do like "Witch Hunt" from 'Moving Pictures', which takes on fundies and censorship.

I am not a Queen fan, but there are many here who are. I consider them RW, for defying the apartheid boycott of South Africa in the 80's and actually playing Sun City. Never liked them anyway, so it was no loss for me.

18. That's supposedly why Gram Parsons left.
Though it's possible they played to unsegregated audiences - in that case it's a more minor offence.

21. Here.
http://www.3rdearmusic.com/hyarchive/hiddenyearsstory/turtletour2.html

Interesting anecdote on Carlos: Some of you old Rocking Chair exponents may recall why Gram parson's never toured SAfrica in 1968? He didn't want to play in front of segregated audiences? So say the history books, rock encyclopedias & all the rest. While Dave Crosby & Gene Clarke were still with the band, they had recorded with Hugh Masekela in 1966 & Hugh would have made them aware of the situation in South Africa, no doubt. Infact, when 3rd Ear Music brought Crosby, Stills & Nash out to Africa in 1995, the Crosby / Masekela re-union at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg, was quite an occasion - Hugh himself having been in exile for 35 years.

Parsons certainly seemed to have a political bent & was very aware of the racist & segregation problems in his own country; however his motives for not touring were not purely political. Gene Vincent's Blue Caps stayed behind in Capetown 10 years earlier (on their 1959 South African Tour with local act Mickey Most & The Playboys), clever PR & a few spin doctors who had to cover for the guys because they were having such a good time in Capetown - brought out the opportune racist bogey. Why go up to Jo'Burg anyway?

Well, according to a few of Gram's friends - they confided some years later to Rock music fanatic, researcher & friend Richard Haslop - there wasn't a political slant to his reasons for not touring. That came after a few differences & counter-decisions with the band. Being a Gram Parson's people - both Richard & I in noway wish to denigrate Gram, and the official version may be the only one - but it's not quite true. The Byrds were going through some changes & various members were committed to solo projects anyway; besides Gram was in London in July 1968 when the SA Tour was about to start & he didn't want to leave. He was having a good time. So Carlos, their Road manager - before joining the Turtles fulltime as Tour manager - took on the task of filling in on Guitar - & Bass too I think! However principled Gram & the Byrds may have been - and we don't doubt that - & however abhorrent the idea & application of segregated audiences were, the Byrds did undertake to do the tour as a band. Besides if they were that concerned, why did CBS (through Gallo Africa) promote & release their albums so vigorously? There were a number of suggestions - from 3rd Ear Music as well - that artists who were serious about the cultural boycott, should prevent their records from being play listed on National State Radio, the SABC - our segregated Public Broadcaster. This never happened. For every anti-racist announcement made through a press secretary of the record labels' PR, sales would increase. They were selling good quantities of records & that Byrd's tour was part of promoting those sales, no matter what the pious & the PC may claim today.

17. Was it just Neil or did Geddy or Alex ever write lyrics that were
Ayn Rand based?

The trees always left me feeling a little confused. I mean, was it right that the oaks ignored the maples? Was it wrong for the maples to demand equal rights? And that they both suffered the same fates, what is *wrong* with that?

Geez.

So it was about a friend, and not all AIDS sufferers in general. I haven't heard it since it was new. Needed my memory refreshed.

I'll still allow it as a strike against being out-and-out RW, since no wingnut would even admit to having a friend with AIDS.

7. I was going to say Rush
But I can really only think of a couple of songs by them that could be construed as right wing. One is "Anthem" which implies that selfishness is good. Another is "The Trees" which really isn't right wing so much as it is anti-socialist. But you can't overlook more sensitive songs like "Closer to the Heart" and "Subdivisions" that aren't typical of right wing thought.

13. I like 'Red Sector A'
Geddy Lee's mother was a survivor of Auschwitz (she was a Polish-Jewish immigrant to Canada after WW2), and that song was for her. For that alone, they may have been naive with the Rand crap (which was Neil Peart's influence more than anything), but not dyed-in-the-wool wingnuts.

8. Probably Kiss, in all seriousness.
Gene Simmons doesn't flaunt his freeper views the way Ted Nugent does, but his whole philosophy on life and outlook on the world is as right-wing as they get.

I may be wrong, but I kinda get the impression that Paul Stanley has somewhat of a conservative streak too.

Their "feud" with Neil Young is one of rock's most unfortunate enduring canards, possibly because the tounge-in-cheek intent of Ronnie Van Zant was lost in the press miasma and other swirl.

20. The original Skynyrd was NOT repuke
They played many fund-raising concerts for Jimmy Carter's 1976 campaign. I have a pic of Ronnie Van Zant with a Jimmy Carter t-shirt.

Plus, he wrote rock's best anti-gun song, "Saturday Night Special", plus anti-poverty/anti-Vietnam songs like "Things Goin' On" and "Four Walls of Raiford". Pro-environmental songs like "All I Can Do Is Write About It", and anti-racism songs like "The Ballad of Curtis Loew".

Rest assured, the only version of Skynyrd I acknowledge weren't freepers. I am a lifelong fan who can vouch for that.

35. There were 2 threads the other day
A few of us, including me, posted at great length about 'Sweet Home Alabama'.

In Ronnie's own words and deeds, he was a major Neil Young fan. He wrote those lyrics as a joke, because he was defensive about southerners accused of automatically being racist. Neil loved the song, and played it when Ronnie died in the '77 plane crash.

Also, he not only said "Neil is a genius", but he wore a Neil Young "Tonight's The Night" t-shirt many times, most notably on the cover of "Street Survivors" in 1977.

And... Neil wrote "Powderfinger" and "Sedan Delivery" specifically as songs he wanted Skynyrd to cover, but the crash occurred before that could occur.

Google the lyrics to the Drive-By Truckers song "Ronnie and Neil" for more. :-)

I always got a kick out of "Gimme Three Steps" as well. Not a lot of macho posturing there.

Gotta disagree with you on "Saturday Night Special" being the best anti gun song. That'd be "Devil's Right Hand" by Steve Earle, another liberal long haired Southern boy.
Well, you did say best ROCK song, so maybe DRH is more a country tune but it's the best anti gun song I've ever heard, regardless of genre.

24. I have to admit that I like the guitar playing of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter,
who did a stint with the Doobie Brothers and with Steely Dan.

This guy is a nutcase though, with all kinds of missile fantasies and blah, blah.

I've always wondered whether Donald Fagen was thinking of Jeff when he wrote the lines in "Jack of Speed" (on "Two Against Nature") that went:

Sheena's party - there's a case in point
That right-wing hooey sure stunk up the joint
He's gone - he walks through the old routines
But he's gone - guaranteed
He may be sittin' in the kitchen, but he's
Steppin' out with the Jack of Speed

You maybe got lucky for a few good years
But there's no way back from there to here
He's a one way rider
On the shriek express
And his new best friend is at the throttle more or less

25. Ted Nugent To Jam For Crawford Marching Band
WESH.com
Ted Nugent To Jam For Crawford Marching Band
Rocker To Play Fund-Raiser For Crawford Marching Band

POSTED: 8:43 am EST January 15, 2005

CRAWFORD, Texas -- Forget the bake sale. Ted Nugent will be jammin' the gym on Saturday to raise money for a high school band's trip to the presidential inauguration.

Nugent, who recently relocated from Michigan to tiny Crawford, home of President George W. Bush's ranch, is expected to play old favorites like "Cat Scratch Fever" at a sold-out show at Crawford High School.

As the only Texas high school band invited by Bush to the inauguration, the 26 members and 10 sponsors needed to raise about $48,000 to fly to the nation's capital.

They plan to play "The Yellow Rose of Texas" during a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Nugent, a well known conservative and avid hunter, told The Dallas Morning News for an online story that he volunteered after hearing through the grapevine that the kids needed help.

41. Define "Best Right Wing Rock Band...."?
Do you mean their music/lyrics or the bands personal opinions/political affiliation(s)?

From what I understand, the members of "Aerosmith" lean towards the conservative side, but you'd never know it by their music and they're easily one of my top 10 favorite bands.
