Lefty Rednecks
Gotta love em...you know who I'm talking about? They love NASCAR, country music, grow their own dope, drink beer instead of wine and vote Democrat.

They do exist, despite what the Repugs would like you to believe...

1. Yes, I've met a few.
They actually remind me of displaced hippies in the south more than rednecks, but you're right... they do exist.

2. I know
I work with one. He has the beer gut to prove it, and the pickup truck as well. No way in the nether regions will he ever vote Rethug. He knows they are against the workin' man.

I see them all the time around here
:D Heck I'm something of one myself. :-) Though I prefer wine and the Olympics, thank you.

4. I possibly fall into that category
I love F1 and I'm guzzling McEwan's "No 1" beer right now.

I don't grow dope and don't imbibe the stuff though.

Ooerr, I'm a Scottish redneck! We call them teuchters (pron: tyoochters) over here. The meaning of the word is obscure but is generally accepted as meaning "wild/uncouth highland man". I'm a male highlander and I am a tad uncouth; don't know if I'm wild though.

5. you may classify me as a redneck
although, I don't classify myself as that. But I love NASCAR, listen to Country Music, B/F, Dad, Brothers, Step-mom, sister-in-law, etc. all drive pick ups (usually for their work or to have a hitch to haul horse trailers, etc.) We wear a lot of flannel shirts, drink beer and all voted for Kerry. (except step-mom, she didn't vote and we've given her hell for it)

I also know many suit wearing, educated, wine drinking types that voted for the Shrub.

C'mon now, you like us better right?

8. Of course!
Personally I feel more at home with the lefty rednecks than I do with the lefty snobs, although I can keep company with both.

I have a good friend who lives in the Boulder Creek area, and is what many here would call a redneck. Votes Democrat nationally, and greenish locally.

My favorite quote from him came during the 90's, when there was a lot of discussion of tolerance, specifically in regards to GLBT's.

"Tolerate? I may be a hilbilly but I've always thought who the fuck are any of us to think we're so high up as to make a statement to tolerate or not tolerate another person because of something they do that doesn't affect me one whit!"

10. I will have to admit
while many of my friends did vote for Kerry, they are not all - how should I say, enlightened? (I'm not referring to my immediate family btw - they are very open minded and tolerant - my dad and step-mom rented a trailer to a homosexual couple in the early 80's. They were family friends and occasionally baby-sat. We live in a rural area that is very sparse when it comes to minorities but, my Dad will fight for equal rights without batting an eye.)

But, some friends are homophobes and have used language that I don't approve of. I give them eye rolls or correct their unfortunate use of words, but the sad part is that in rural parts of America, racist remarks are sometimes overlooked and not seen for what they are. It breaks my heart sometimes that people I see as good hearted and caring can make statements that are so hurtful. Liberals should not write them off though, but should see that this is what they have grown up with and are able to change. My b/f has come miles since we started dating. I have a covert way of choosing movies for us to watch that points out how things really affect people.

BTW - this is in no way relegated to the "rednecks". My boss makes 6 figures, wears suits and makes statements that cause my jaw to hit the floor daily.

6. My father loves NASCAR, country music, and beer.
Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 05:14 PM by Left Is Write
However, he also drinks wine, enjoys an occasional Manhattan, spent 41 years wearing a suit and tie to a white collar job, and has never smoked dope, nevermind grown it.

While he likes his races and his country music, he couldn't be called a redneck. And he's something of a beer snob. No Bud or Miller Lite for him.

Edited to add - he's been a lifelong Democrat.

7. "Rednecks for Peace"
I don't know if they're die hard Dems, but I've seen this bumpersticker around Bloomington, IN. It always makes me smile. If I ever see one in a parking lot, I'll leave the guy/gal a little note of approval. It's not exactly the easiest position to hold these days.

They are, indeed, the kind of guys whose last words could very well be "Hey, baby, watch this!"

12. My dad is the opposite
He's a white collar doctor, drives a Volvo, likes sushi, thinks pro sports, especially NASCAR, are idiotic, reads the New York Times but is inexplicably a Bushie.
