3. We've tried several

Finally settled on a tivoli iPAL. Great little am/fm radio with input jack to connect your mp3 player. Even has a 16 hour rechargeable battery built in. Here is a link:

7. I don't know about tiny speakers but

I just plug mine into an old pair of powered computer speakers. Not portable but sounds good at home.

an extra set of those and may use them until I can find a smaller pair for my backpack. Nothing like camping out next to a quiet mountain stream with Humble Pie bangin away in my tent.
