2. Gyro. From my favorite Greek woman
who won't serve it until you pronounce it correctly.

4. How is it pronounced anyways?
I *know* it can't be ji-ro, although that's always how I've heard it pronounced. I'm guessing y'ear-o. Actually I have no clue.

11. Indeed. My ex-husband was half-Greek...
he always called 'em yee-ros

And if you think about it, it's not a big jump to Hero sandwich, which is basically what it is. :)

Oh man...it's practically midnight and I'm thinking about Gyros. Damn.

Wonder where the nearest place is so I can grab one for lunch tomorrow. :)

I'm in NJ now, grew up in The Bronx and lived in Manhattan for a while.

Have eaten marvelous Greek food in Astoria, and once upon a time long long ago, had some homemade ouzo cooked up by one of the little old ladies of Astoria. :)

but I'm not going there for lunch tomorrow...just Too Far.

30. Bette Midler would sing to that sandwich, "did you ever know that
you're my gyro,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

(she really likes gyros apparently)

As I know quite a lot American fans of it, I believe success in the US is just a matter of time.

39. Interesting, thanks for the article!
And I hope you're right. Aside from Spain, I also had Doners in France and Belgium, and all three were a little different. The one or two I had in Belgium were spicy as hell, but good (I think it was the sauce). I don't know what kind of sauce they put on there (in general), but I think that's part of why I liked them so much.

They seem so simple, why can't they get it right HERE?!? Hopefully this German Kebab Company will come through!

down in the village.

You can go there at 5:30am and have a line out onto the street. The best falafel in the whole world and they only cost $2.

44. King Tut's on Magnolia St in Ft Worth, or Byblos on North Main
or one of several Greek places as well.

My favorite Greek dish is spanikopita,
and I love moussaka

Our little Egyptian place ( Tut's) makes a decadent Macaron, which is an Egyptian version of the Greek lasagna- like dish.

I am not even hungry and I am now hungry for all of these things

and tabbuleh too
