Great Overlooked Albums
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 10:07 PM by BurtWorm

"Supersnazz" (1969) by the Flamin' Groovies. While they were recording it, they understood that they were hired to make "the next 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.'" But they clearly had a lot of fun on the job. Songs range from down and dirty blues, rockabilly and boogie to countryish folk, psychedelic ballads, and music hall style goofs. My current favorite is Around the Corner which betrays their affinity with the Beach Boys.

Tracks
Love Have Mercy (Loney) 4:27
The Girl Can't Help It (Troup) 3:27
Laurie Did It (Loney) 3:49
Apart From That (Loney, Jordan) 1:56
Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu (Vincent) 2:42
The First One's Free (Loney) 3:38
Pagan Rachel (Loney) 1:52
Somethin' Else / Pistol Packin' Mama (Sheely/Cochran, Dexter) 3:42
Brushfire (Loney, Jordan) 3:15
Bam Balam (Loney, Jordan) 1:47
Around the Corner (Loney, Jordan)

1. Dory Previn "reflections in a mud puddle"
I used to love the album and wore it out. I think there was more to the title: Taps, Tremors and Timesteps" or else it was first called that, and then later "Reflections." I think I will go try and dind a CD of her's now.

2. Mississippi
No, not THAT one-- this was an Austrailian group that put out one self-titled album back in the 70s, that was never released in the US. I first bought it on vinyl while in England. Later on, after I sold my entire vinyl collection, I regretted losing this one most of all, and I spent years trying to locate it again. I finally found it offered on a small music cd internet site in the Netherlands, and I immediately bought it.

Track it down and check it out if you can. It's full of mellow southern-style rock, complete with the most fantastic lyrics, harmonies, and guitar work. Good luck if you find it!

3. Nash Kato. Debutante

Just great all the way around. Hard rock with all the rich production of the best hard rock albums of the 70's and 80's. His voice is velvet smooth and his guitar is fantastic.

5. Natacha Atlas: "Halim" and "Gedida"
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 11:21 PM by BurtWorm

Natacha Atlas, daughter of an English mother and a Sephardic Jewish father, grew up in Belgium and England, but was drawn to Arabic language and culture. She first sang for Transglobal Underground, a British world beat band that Jah Wobble (of Public Image Ltd.) produced and played with. Halim was her first solo album, and it's most seductive track, "Kiddah," is featured on Putumayo's Arabic Groove, which is where I first heard her. It's one of the hippest, sexiest pieces of pop music I've ever heard. There's some other great music on here, but I prefer her second album, Gedida, by a nose. So does my wife and our seven-year-old daughter. Atlas describes herself as a walking Gaza Strip. Most of her songs are love songs, but one intense number of Gedida called "Bastet," about world peace and broken down borders was banned in some Arabic countries for its political message.

7. Low and Sweet Orchestra "Goodbye To All That"
Edited on Wed Jul-16-03 12:13 AM by mitchum
Mid-90s 7-piece Southern California band including Mike Mart (Tex and The Horseheads, Thelonious Monster), Zander Schloss (Circle Jerks), James Feanley (Pogues), Dermot Mulroney (the actor guy) Fantastic record that combines rock, folk, Celtic. and John Ford film music. Don't be scared off by Mulroney's presence. He is an incredibly gifted musician (this is no Dogstar or Aleka's Attic)
