Plan for Ramone statue inspired by Reagan
http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1387594,00.html

The unlikely connection between a Republican president and a punk icon was highlighted yesterday when it was revealed that a statue of Johnny Ramone inspired by the lavish funeral of Ronald Reagan will be unveiled this week.

Ramone, who died in September last year, was the guitarist with the Ramones and unofficial leader of the group. But, unlike his colleagues - and in contrast to his rebellious image - he was a committed Republican.

"We were watching the funeral from Cedars-Sinai , and Johnny had always loved Reagan - he was his favourite president and his favourite actor," Arturo Vega, the band's artistic director, told the Los Angeles Times. The grandeur of the Reagan funeral led Ramone to consider the memorial to his own mortality.

"And we were admiring how well it was going and how everything was done. I suggested some kind of monument ... He agreed right away. The monument was my idea; the statue was his idea."

20. rightwing punks=skinheads (not all skinheads btw)
there are many factions of skinheads, even redskins (lefties) and queerskins but most right ring punks would feel comfortable with many traditional skinhead views (ie not necessarily hardcore neo-nazi, but patriotic/nationalist and homophobic).

21. actually, we go liberal to rebel against our parents' for selling out
the boomers may love to wax nostalgic about the 60s, but they're the ones who grew up and voted overwhelmingly for reagan and bush

gen x-ers voted for kerry, the only demographic to do so

in time, maybe we'll outnumber the 60s crowd and make up for the loss of the new deal senior citizens who are dying out

10. Joey wrote that song and Johnny was pissed...
Johnny was always an outspoken republican/reagan fan. I remember being bummed about that in the 80's when I found out. Especially since that song is probably my favorite Ramones song.

15. Actually, Dee Dee wrote Bonzo
Joey helped write the middle eight, I think, but Dee Dee wrote in one burst after watching Reagan on TV. He grew up in Germany and knew exactly what that graveyard was.

I interviewed the Ramones several times, and while they busted Johnny's balls about his politics, they really weren't close enough to care. Joey and Johnny didn't speak for years. Even at the end of Joey's life, I think Johnny refused to call him because he thought it would be hypocritical.

They pretty much communicated through Arturo and Mark and later CJ.

18. Yeah, that was always weird to me....
The fact that they didn't talk.

I know the main issue was the notion of Johnny stealing Joey's girlfriend from him but I think it went deeper.

Did Johnny end up staying with that same woman until he died? I don't know why I thought that.

The Punk Icon was full of it. But, then again, Mussolini started as a Communist intellectual.

6. Put Up The Statue Of Johnny Ramone
And let it be carved out of elephant bone.
With a Mosrite guitar it ought to be fitted,
A proper remembrance for one so committed.

Johnny was the republican. And I didn't know that any of them other than Dee Dee were ever on heroin.

16. Dee Dee did the drugs for all of them
Joey smoked pot and drank a little beer, Johnny pretty much didn't do anything. Tommy the same. They really weren't druggies at all.
