Any one else tired of the constant references to Orwell?
Now don't get me wrong, the man wrote 2 very poignant novels and deserves a place among the great authors of the 20th century. With that said, is it really necessary to invoke "Big Brother" every single time the government does something you disagree with?

Flame away!

2. And....
Someone should remind the current administration that "1984" was written as a warning not an instruction manual.

3. I agree
Orwell was a critic of the Soviet police state. We are living under capitalistic corporate rule. That said, repression, intolerance, and state-controlled media are common to both systems.

4. No. I'm not tired of it.
It has never been more appropriate and no administration has come closer to being the government depicted in '1984'. Have you read '1984'? If not I suggest that do. The comparisons have very little to do with the government 'doing something we disagree with'.

5. I just reread 1984 in May
And it really has many powerful similarities to politics today. One passage that amazed me in its relevance to the Republicans was a section talking about how sexual repression was the parties greatest tool, and the most sexually repressed citizens were those most loyal to the party. Meanwhile, the Republicans think virginity is a great thing and gay sex should be illegal...

7. Government is a scapegoat
Orwell didn't even envisage the corporate takeover, otherwise he would have called it "Big Brother$".
