Baby Will No Longer Be Named By Highest Bidder On Ebay
<snip>

If you were hoping to bid on a baby's middle name as a unique gift for that person who has everything, you'll have to look elsewhere.

In a creative way to raise money, a Goshen, Ind., couple that doesn't have health insurance was selling the right on eBay for someone to choose their baby's middle name. It would have been an expensive middle name -- the lowest amount they said they would accept was $8,000. The bid just before noon Friday was $5,700. After much publicity, eBay got wind of the auction and decided to take it offline.

When the auction was still listed, the couple said that an official document with baby's full name would be mailed upon birth. The parents had reserved the right to deny names that they thought were inappropriate, but said were willing to accept most anything -- including company names.

On the site, the couple wrote that they do both work full-time jobs, but that neither job provides health insurance. They are trying to cover the cost of the upcoming bills and promised all the money will go toward the well-being of the new baby.

Since gaining publicity, the auction spawned several copycat auctions. One seller was trying to sell the naming rights of their new kitten.
