Brits and Yanks

We have some very close friends who immigrated here from England in the early 70s.
Because of this we are conversant in lifts and loos, torches and bonnets, hooters (NOT the restaurant or boobs) and boots (NOT footwear).

But here's something that bugs me:
The real estate that surrounds my house is my "yard". Or maybe the "lawn".
I have a front yard and a back yard.
They have a "garden".

Here's what perplexes me:
In my yard I have a flower garden and a vegetable garden.
Their whole thing is a "garden".
How can I tell if they're talking about grass, flowers, veggies, or what?
It's very confusing.
