ME? in "Diversity Training"?
Edited on Fri Dec-10-04 07:50 AM by underpants
Yep I have to go to "Diversity Training" today ALL DAY.

When my boss first told me that we were instituting a diversity training program I asked him "How often will you or I have to teach it?" and "THIS PLACE needs diversity training? This place IS diversity training!!!"

The organization I work for includes about 250 people total of those I am one of about 20 white males and maybe 50 males total. The rest of my fellow employees are all women most all African-American women. All shapes, sizes, colors, and preferences are openly represented too. The Holiday breakfast truly is something to behold.

Okay so I have to go and learn about Age-ism, tolerance, sexism (hold your thoughts for a moment), and understanding.

Look as liberal as my wife and my friends tell me I am this is a bit much, but I will go along with it and not even let my satirical "Archie Bunker" persona come out.I have been told that there is much hand holding and testifying going on. I swear if someone breaks out an acoustic guitar and we start singing "Kumbaya" I am out of there.

I'll try to keep the jokes to myself.

ON EDIT-I get free t-shirt out of it and we meet only about 5 mintues from here AND I don't have to be there until 9.

9. I've been to diversity training sessions
before and thought they were, for the most part, boilerplate bullshit and a waste of time. Sorry if that's politically incorrect. So much of the stuff was so basic and boiled down, amounts to simple respect and courtesy.

11. What like having common consideration for other people?
Nothing PO's me more than people demeaning other people. I hear that what you describe is a watered down version of what I am about to encounter.

12. Pointless. If one is racist, one day isn't going to change that.
The racial stereotypes are everywhere and we are bombarded with them 24 hours a day. 1 day of sensitivity training isn't going to change that. It's like snipping the top off a weed. It doesn't mean crap if the roots are still there.

15. That is (supposedly) the issue
Edited on Fri Dec-10-04 08:16 AM by brooklynite
My office (a Govt agency) wanted to ship everyone off to diversity training because (supposedly), we needed to understand the cultural differences of our multi-ethnic workforce to better understand how to work with them (e.g. some cultural groups are outgoing, some introverted, some more sensitive to authority figures etc, I resisted because my view of the people I worked with was that very few of them met the alleged profile of their particular group.

CB maybe you should have represented the Klingon group and focused on its pluses and minuses.

Actually so far it has been pretty good. I am sitting there imagineing what RWers would think and how soon their heads would explode.

I am the only white guy in the room (our of about 25) and we the only groups not represented are Jews and Asians EVERYONE else is represented EVERYONE!

22. My workplace needs diversity training
Unfortunately, I am not joking. Even though your workplace may not seem to need it, I think that it would help more than it would hurt.
I'll stop now before I start getting angry anout sexism again.

23. At my workplace, there are posters all over the place"Sexual Harrassment
is Not Acceptable"

Well, guess what, when I reported it to my female boss (!) about a colleague, she showered me with (fake) sympathy (which I mistook for real) and led me away from effectively dealing with it and holding him accountable! Lied to me that no other complaints had occured. When I finally found out through other means that I should go to Human Resources, I did. They asked if I had documentation ( I did), and seemed very serious in assuring me that they could check his computer archives, etc. (most of it occured through computer). Well, guess what else? After they called my boss in to speak to her their story with me changed;
THEM: "Oh we don't archive email, but we'll keep this on file so that if anyone ever complains..."
ME: "it wasn't email, it was through a website, his visits to the site should be on his computer"
THEM: "we don't archive email"
ME: "but it....." oh forget it.

And I've spoken to another manager there who let me know that he (all of them? I'm not sure) is aware that this guy targets young and/or vulnerable women. :wtf:

Guess this is slightly OT, but what hypocrisy!! What is up with sexism always getting a free pass?

Sorry if I got you angry about sexism again
