What kind of nasty old, 4-month-old type food do you have sitting in your
fridge right now?

Seriously, go look. And come back and tell us.

I just threw out some old Chinese food from at least a month ago. It was way in the back, clearly ashamed of itself and avoiding social interaction with the beer and tortillas.

1. I'm quite convinced I should throw out
The container of basmati rice with cumin I made for my husband back in July. You think?

2. None.
I clean the fridge out once a week.

You know what's worse than furry leftovers, though? Rotting lettuce. Ewwwww!

7. And I just thought of something even worse than that...
...a sippy cup left out in the car.

18. There's one thing worse
I left a safeway bag with a dirty diaper in it in the back of the car before going out of town for a weekend this summer. I live in California, so the inside of the car was hotter than the surface of the sun. That diaper got reeeeaaaallllly foul!

I didn't throw it out, although it was tempting, but I did wash it once in the public washroom before letting it back in the house with the rest of the laundry.

3. I have a buffalo stew that's at least a month old.
Don't know what it looks like, haven't had the guts to check.

Luckily, I don't cook much so I won't need the pot it's in for at least another 6 months. :)

6. I had an old half full carton of eggs that I just now threw out.
Eggs go bad after a few months, right?

16. old eggs peel better when you boil them
how to check eggs: float them in a pan of water - if they bob right to the top best to carefully get rid of them -- be careful they stink.

if they just roll up barely off the bottom they are ok. sunk on the bottom - pretty fresh (not likely with store eggs)

Eggs actually store refrigerated for quite a long time - this is a good way to check if you are in doubt.

10. Leftovers From a Roast Beef Dinner
that I have no recollection of originally eating. Must be at least a couple of months old. Found in a generic plasticware container behind the condiments and bottles of sauces. I won't describe the contents, but I threw out the container along with the biological experiments.

19. Let's see
Mashed potatoes and lentil loaf from Thanksgiving, some hip whip and soft tofu I an pretty sure went bad already, and some mystery goo that I think used to be curried lentils.

Time to clean out the fridge and feed the compost pile. Wonder what I'd have to do to convince LeftyDad to do it for me. ;)

23. I'm really nutty about keeping my fridge clean
I cannot stand the thought of even being near spoiled food. It's almost a phobia with me. So, I never let food get to that stage. After two days, all leftovers are history. In fact, I'll only store leftovers if it's something I know for sure will be eaten soon. My grandmother bristled at my "wasting food", but I can't help it. When we lost power for several days after a freak storm, I had to leave the house while my husband cleaned it out. I was pregnant at the time, though.

A 2 yr old turkey went to the trash.
A 3 yr old box of crab legs met the same demise.

Both were rock solid.
