Comes pretty much from video games.

Sort of like 1337 became slang from "leet" or "elite". (Flip the word around 180 degrees.) Hacker and computer gaming slang. "He's a 1337 player".

It came out of old-school FPS games, like Quake or Doom.

Basically, if your player was killed in a rather brutal or embarassing way, the guy who killed you would say "you got owned."

With the advent of the internet came idiots who played and can't type. So, a few people mistyped and made it "pwned", and it's become sort of a geek/gamer inside joke.

The freeptards, though, hijacked it for their little wet dream war in Iraq which they probably see as nothing more than a video game anyway. Fucking assholes :grr:
