Poll question: Which of these song lyrics "moves" you the most?
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 07:21 PM by JanMichael
You know, you get chills reading them, or hearing them performed.

All three the result of War...

What's Going On
(Al Cleveland/Marvin Gaye/Renaldo Benson)

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

One Tin Soldier

Listen children to a story that was written long ago
'bout a kindom on a mountain and the valley folk below
on the mountain was a treasure buried deep beneath a stone
and the valley people swore they'd have it for their very own

CHORUS: go ahead and hate your neighbor
go ahead and cheat a friend
do it in the name of heaven
you could justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
come the judgment day
on the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away

So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill,
asking for the buried treasure, tons of gold for which they'd kill.
Came an answer from the kingdom "with our brothers we will share.
All the secrets of our mountain, all the riches buried there."

Now the valley cried with anger,"mount your horses, draw your swords"
And they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward.
Now they stood beside the treasure, on the mountain dark and red.
Turned the stone and looks beneath it; PEACE ON EARTH was all it said.

CHORUS

REPEAT

Barry McGuire
Eve of destruction

The Eastern world, it is explodin',
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'.
You're old enough to kill, but not for votin',
You don't believe in war -- but what's that gun you're totin'?
An' even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'.
But you tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.
Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say,
An' can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today?
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away,
There'll be no one to save, will the world in a grave.
Take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy.
An' you tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Yeak, my blood's so mad feels like coagulatin',
I'm sittin' here just contemplatin'.
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation,
Handful of senators don't pass legislation,
An' marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin',
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'.
An' you tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China,
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama.
Ah, you may leave here for four days in space,
But when you return it's the same ol' place,
The poundin' of the drums, the pride an' disgrace.
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace.
Hate your next-door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace,
An' tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction,
No, no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

2. I love Marvin, but I voted 'other'
This is about struggle more than war. Recorded by Harry Belafonte, The Brothers Four, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Mahalia Jackson, Moms Mabley, Smokey Robinson, and Kenny Rogers.

Abraham, Martin and John

Has anybody here,
Seen my old friend Abraham,
Can you tell me, where he's gone,
He freed a lotta people,
But it seems the good die young,
I just looked around,
And he's gone,

Has anybody here,
Seen my old friend John,
Can you tell me, where he's gone,
He freed a lotta people,
But it seems the good die young,
I just looked around,
And he's gone,

Has anybody here,
Seen my old friend Martin,
Can you tell me, where he's gone,
He freed a lotta people,
But it seems the good die young,
I just looked around,
And he's gone,

Didn't you love the things they stood for,
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me,
And we'll be free,
Someday soon it's gonna be one day,

Has anybody here,
Seen my old friend Bobby,
Can you tell me, where he's gone,
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill,
With Abraham, Martin and John.

3. There was a nice Wellstone retrospective flash video using that song
Maybe it's time for those good folks to add in a verse for our old friend Paul.

10. another kickass song
We gotta have peace, by Curtis Mayfield

...And the people in the neighbourhood
They would if they only could
Meet and shake each other’s hand
Work together for the good of the land
Give us all an equal chance
It would be such a sweet romance
And the soldiers who are dead and gone
If only we could bring back one
He’d say we gotta have peace
peace, peace, peace, peace, peace, ...

12. It's Alright Ma
While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.

or...

Masters of War

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

- Bob Dylan

13. This is the all time, move me to tears...Check these lyrics out...
************** SIX WHITE HORSES ***************

performed by Waylon Jennings.

Come here and look through the window Marie

Open up the shutters, tell me what you see

Was that his knock that i heard at the door

Or is it six white horses coming down the road

Come here and touch me and say that it's alright

You know that to my eyes the days are as the nights

Read again the letter that tells me where he's gone

To hell with the fighting i want my son home

I taught him to fish and i taught him to be strong

I taught him that killing any man was wrong

But tommorrow in battle i'd run to where he stood

If the help of a blind man would do any good

Last night i went to his room for awhile

I've touched all the things that he used as a child

I rocked the cradle where he used to lay

I found his tin soldiers and threw them away

Come here and look through the window Marie

Open up the shutters, tell me what you see

Was that his knock that i heard at the door

Or is it six white horses coming up the road

I get the shivers and teary every time I hear it...I know it's country, but...Man...powerful...

No Tears in Heaven.

Would you know my name
If you saw me in Heaven?

Chokes me up every time I hear it.

15. Take the last train to Clarksville
Okay I am just monkeyin' around.

What about "Mary in the Morning" by Paperlace

"I don't know the men I will be fighting
but I'm sure that we are much the same
each one has a Mary in the morning
that we may never see again"

I always liked the "One Tin Soldier" since I am a trumpet player -
there won't be any trumpets blowin'

I just thought of Def Leppard's "God's of War"

"We are fighting for the God's of War, but I'm a rebel, and I aint gonna fight no more."

Asia also has a couple good anti-war songs - "Wildest Dreams" and "Countdown to Zero"

"We see the soldiers moving on to victory
and children trampled under marching feet
we fight - we fight! - for king and country
how many millions will they put to sleep?"
