Reagan took office when I was in FIFTH grade and didn't leave until
January of my FRESHMAN YEAR IN COLLEGE.

How's THAT for being president for a millenium? Looking back, it feels like he was president my entire life, because I have only one memory of Ford (well not really of Ford, but of Chevy Chase falling down a lot) and a few memories of Carter and that's it. Nixon, I was way too young to remember.

It was all Reagan, all the time. Dunno why I thought of this. Just seems like fifth grade to freshman year in college sounds like a hell of a lot longer than two Presidential terms.

Anyone else you felt like was in office for 5000 years?

5. Nope. I remember plenty of "Pope Paul VI blah blah Pope Paul VI blah blah"
in the TV news when I was a kid.

But it's OK; you're hardly out of your diapers. Brat.

9. No shit.
Lessee, when do I first remember him???

Oh yeah, I know! When I was in the fourth grade he was shot or there was an attempted assassination, right? Then he went around in the Popemobile for a long time after that.

I got into the biggest fight with my best friend Linda when that happened. She was Catholic, we were not. But my mom mentioned to me that the Bible said you should pray for your enemies, so my mom said maybe instead of hating the guy who shot the pope, we should pray for him?

So I went to school and told Linda, all proud of myself for knowing something about the Bible and she got mad, went home, told HER mom who said we were just POPE-HATERS because we would pray for the guy who shot him! She and I got into a wicked nasty fight right there on the playground about praying for the guy who shot him!

I went home in tears and told my mother who showed me the verse in the Bible. I felt all vindicated. Then she said maybe I should pray for my friend Linda and her mom (this was all rather out of character, as my mom, while Christian, normally wasn't one to discuss religion). I went to school the next day and told Linda that, who got pissed off, went home and told her mother what I said again, and SHE got pissed off.

It very nearly killed my friendship. It was the last time I EVER made suggestions as to who someone should pray for.

And the pope was the pope at that point for several years, right? Daaaaaaaamn.

2. Fidel Castro
Spans my entire lifetime with plenty of room to spare. He's the Queen Victoria of the 20th/21th century.

And now I just had a mental image of Fidel Castro in a Victorian dress. I'm a fucked-up person.

I saw that voodoo economics was a crock of shit. Even as a teenager, I could tell that. And nothing much was trickling down.

But I bet I beat you, percentage-wise in years lived under repukes. When I was born, Nixon was still in office. Then four years of Ford, four years of Carter, eight of Reagan, four of daddy bush, eight of Clinton and now four of baby bush.

That makes 12 years under Dems and 22 years under repukes.

UG.

Wait, on edit I see I have a few more years of Dem than you. So that about evens out.

Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 06:27 PM by CO Liberal
And didn't leave until I was in Second Grade and eight years old.

All in all that makes 20 years under Democratic presidents, and 32 under Republican presidents (and one mentally-challenged, alcoholic coke-addict deserter).

20. Exactly the same for me with Clinton.
He took office when I was in the fifth grade, and left office my freshman year.

My educational career will likely span four Presidents before all is said and done: Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, and (blech) Bush 43.

23. YIKES!
Helmut Kohl, right? I might have gotten his first name wrong. I remember him. That is a long-ass time for a chancellor to be in office. What are the term limits in Germany, anyway? Are there any?

26. indeed
There is no limit; technically Kohl had two terms twice anyway (two terms in West Germany and two terms in reunified Germany).

Yup, Helmut is a man of the superlatives: longest time in office, "largest", longest , (probably) most corrupt, most incompetent,...

I'm 22, and so far I'm under my 3rd republican president, while I've only been under one democratic prez.
