Report: Yankees to offer Pedro $50 million
But MLB source says free-agent pitcher wants $60 million

-----------------------

The New York Yankees will offer free-agent pitcher Pedro Martinez a four-year deal worth $50 million, but a major-league source says the star wants $60 million, the Bergen County Record reported Tuesday.
The newspaper also said the Boston Red Sox raised their offer to their former star to $38 million.

Red Sox officials met with Martinez last week, one day after the star talked with New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, the Boston Herald reported. Boston general manager Theo Epstein and team president Larry Lucchino met with Martinez at the home of principal team owner John W. Henry at the principal owner's home in Boca Raton, the Herald said.

The Red Sox already have offered a two-year contract worth $25.5 million — with an option for a third year at $13 million — to the three-year Cy Young award winner, the Herald said.

Alex Rodriguez dreams of playing on the same team as Pedro Martinez, a possibility that took shape this week when the free-agent pitcher met with New York Yankees executives.

1. This is an old, unsubstantiated report
Most recent news is that the Yankees haven't actually offered him anything

The Red Sox have already increased their offer substantially from where it is in this article.

6. I claim ignorance--I never saw the original report--perhaps MSNBC is just
"sexing it up" a little to make it seem new. For what it's worth, I think the Yankees are crazy--Pedro doesn't have much left in him. He won't last like Roger did--too scrawny. Hey, but if he can get it, go for it.

7. Just for kicks
I went and checked the Bergen Record, which had no such article today--MSNBC is really full of shit.

And yeah, I kind of agree with you, though I'd sort of still enjoy sticking it to the Sox, though frankly, I don't think they'd care that much.

8. Uh-oh! You're a dreaded Yankees fan!
I just think Pedro is past his prime--it was pretty obvious this year. His final game was great, but you never know which Pedro will show up anyone--the brilliant one, or the flake.

Gotta run!!!!!!!

9. Heh...yeah
I'm a foot-soldier for the evil empire... I was sympathetic towards the Sox til I spent four years living in Boston during college...no one should have to endure that kind of abuse.

11. I've found that wherever I live, I start disliking the local sports team..
...Used to like UCLA, and then, after living in LA, I was so sick of local sports coverage going on and on about how wonderful they were. Also, sort of used to root for the Washington Huskies until I moved to Seattle. Local sports reporting is so biased and so over done. I guess you don't notice it with your local hometeam favorite, but just go to another city and it'll open your eyes!

5. No, this is an old report that wasn't true then.
This is all speculation. Steinbrenner loves shelling out big bucks for tired old arms, but we don't know anything yet.
