I'm sure you know that the Grateful Dead covered Johnny Cash tunes, as well as the aforementioned U2.

Johnny Cash transcended "country" music and if you are so parochial as to dismiss him merely because he was pigeonholed as "country" you only show your lack of sophistication in music appreciation.

Johnny Cash played with Bob Dylan among others. His last records were produced by the great rock producer Rick Rubin. Cash was revered by musicians and fans of all types of music around the world.

Your disrespect of this great artist reflects very negatively on you.

As does your obvious disrupter screen name.

I dig the Dixie Chicks but they haven't made it to the country music pantheon yet....

38. If you're trying to put us on...
...I would submit that pretending to celebrate the death of Johnny Cash is a joke in poor taste.

I take a backseat to no one in not getting much out of country music, but, as others have said, Johnny Cash transcended genre...his early Sun Records work sounds more like Rock n Roll than country, for one thing. For another, Johnny Cash was a man of pretty admirable character.

As someone reasonably familiar with the music, when I listen to Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr., or Patsy Kline, I don't feel like I'm listening to "country" per se--I feel like I'm listening to something very good for which I'm grateful to their memories.

39. Stupid or rude? The eternal question.....
Johnny Cash was a great hero of American music. And I'm saying this NOT as one of those "but I really don't like country music" wimps.

I've got little taste for the country music featured on Clear Channel stations, but most people don't. The "country music" market has been shrinking for some years. The soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou was a huge seller, proving there's a market for roots-oriented music; many of the featured artists work in Bluegrass, but the soundtrack represents even earlier styles. Nashville's answer is pop-oriented trash that drives more listeners away.

None of which matters to our little thread starter. Did he just switch meds?

...the "Times Ain't Like They Used To Be" series? I have all 4 and they are amazing--actual roots music recorded in the 20s and 30s, rather than modern reenactments. The sound quality is excellent. They're among my most prized CDs:

41. Dare I question here.
There's nothing I can specifically hit "alert" for here so Mods, forgive me for this post, but between flame-bait stuff like this, the "I am a 34 year old virgin" posts (which is the type of stuff freepers are notorious for making fun of DU people for), and your mere name, it makes me highly suspicious of you.
If you are one of those citizens of Freepville with far too much time on your hands, be warned, consider yourself watched by many of us now.

p.s. I'm also not much of a country music person, but I find this unbelievably crass. Two words- grow up! :eyes:

46. Hmm. Somebody's starved for attention.
But he's looking for it at the wrong website. Put a sock in it, Dukakis88. I, too, deplore country music, (at least what it has become), but Johnny Cash was a monumental figure in American, not just "country", music. Take a hike.
