3. Insomnia helped along by caffeine and nicotine...
and god's name isn't overused...almost no one uses it at all. But then, people can't figure out exactly how to pronounce it, either...YHVH doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

10. "Why in God's overused name..."?
Funny you should mention that.

It's 4:20am Pacific and I'm listening to a program on BBC Radio 2, in which two BBC reporters followed around two different Republican "congressmen-to-be" during the lead up to their respective election victories three weeks ago.

OVERUSED? Over the course of this one hour radio/doc, produced to give Brits an idea how elections are played out in small-town America, I'VE HEARD THE WORD "GOD" USED MORE TIMES IN ONE SITTING THAN I'VE HEARD THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE LIFE THUS FAR.

As a raging secularist unable to sleep, I'm finding it all rather creepy.

12. I already have a solid, well-researched contingency plan.
If things get any more fucked-up than they already are on this continent, and my country becomes unbearable due to serious "bad karma" osmosing up here to Canada from the US, we'll be moving to Santa Catarina, Brazil. (Deep south, near the Uruguay/Argentina border.)

We spent two months there last spring with ex-pat friends, scouting out work opportunities, real estate, etc. The place is gorgeous, safe, crime-free, the economy is stable, the cost of living is very cheap, etc. And best of all, it's a different freakin' hemisphere.

I love Canada, I'd always planned on staying here, but what's happening with the US (and being so close, it's implications for Canada) scares the shit outa' me.

Who would'a thunk? Having to leave my peaceful, laid-back country (and the 8000lb. gorilla next door) to move to a country that was a military dictatorship a scant 20 years ago, but seems to offer more promise of a decent future...

But only if things get really bad. None of this was my, or Canada's, fault.

14. Yes, can't blame Canada for this!
shameless attempt to get to 1000 posts-
You spent 2 months in Brazil last spring? Did you have an inkling how messed up the US would get/be? Do you speak, what, Portuguese, Espanol,?
I've heard nice things about Brazil...

15. Yes, I can speak a little Portuguese...
But I'll need to get much, much better with the language if I make the move. I speak English, and French (semi-fluent), but both are no help whatsoever in Brazil. We wouldn't have made it through the two months if it wasn't for our friends who live there.

If there's ever a Brazil thread, I'll get into more detail as to why I've chosen this route over others (ie. France, where my wife is from, etc.)

In the meantime, GIMME A THOUSAND, SISTER!!!

makes radio shows about crazy religious repug candidates pandering to religious conservatives. ;) As opposed to Canada.
