Just finished George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" trilogy

Damn, what an incredible story. While not as good as LOTR, I probably enjoyed reading it more as the characters were more human and realistic (real hopes and aspirations as well as human flaws)than any character in LOTR.

Also, by getting the reader more involved in the characters it cuts more when even a minor character dies because of the way that death affects the major players in the drama. Hell, by the end I was feeling sorry for both the "Kingslayer" and "The Hound".

Anyway, an incredible read and highly recommended to anyone who's even remotely interested in the fantasy genre.

4. I've never bought a hardback book (usually wait until paperback)

but I will buy the next installment on hardback when it comes out on initially printing.

Can't wait to see what happens to the surviving characters.

2. Great stuff :) I have a recommendation to fill the time until
the fourth book comes out. . .

Check out Tad Williams "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" series. I enjoyed them almost as much as Martin's stuff.

3. Have your read "Fevre Dream"?
That's the only one by Martin I've read. It's a civil war/vampire story. Incredible book. Rated five stars on Amazon.
