Any Mr. Bungle/Mike Patton fans out there?
Faith No More's "Angel Dust" CD is one of my all time favorites. I have finally resolved to buy its predecessor, The Real Thing.

And then I recalled that Mike Patton sings on the Mr. Bungle CD, which I've never heard but my high-school era headbanger friends universally despised it. I think this is a disc I need to check out.

So, any Mr. Bungle fans out there? What ever happened to FNM, anyway? I saw them open for the ill fated GNR/Metallica show at Foxboro Stadium many moons ago (the site of the infamous stadium wide trash fight...ah, good times). Mike Patton took the stage wearing a gas station attendant's uniform, of all things.

1. You can't go wrong with Mike Patton.
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 05:18 PM by Ekova
The first Mr. Bungle might take some getting used to, but it's a brilliant album. Disco Volante (2nd) is almost impossible to listen to, but I think that may have been the idea. California (3rd) is almost like a streamlined Mr. Bungle - really good as well.

You might want to check out Tomahawk. Sort of Mike musically in between Bungle and FNM.

2. ME ME ME ME ME!!!!
Love It!

I'm a rabid fan. He has a pet label called Ipacec. He also has been involved with a number of projects. I recommend

1) Lovage, music to make love to your old lady by - a lovely sexy dirty smokey album

2) Fantomas, the Directors Cut - Mike redoes Horror movie music themes. Rosemary's baby is coool!

3) Worked with Bjork on her new album.

Also, If you liked mr bungle, I highly recommend getting

Secret Cheifs 3, Book M - Its middle eastern hardcore industrial byzantine madness!

"Secret Cheifs 3, Book M - Its middle eastern hardcore industrial byzantine
madness!"

That sounds pretty great. My CD budget is one/month, but I will add this to The CD List I've maintained for,oh, all 6 years I was in grad school :-)

7. The first Mr. Bungle album is brilliant.
I don't care much for FNM or any of Patton's other stuff but the first Bungle album is a classic. Just a great mix of musical styles, goofy lyrics and strange sounds. I've had people literally get sick from listening to it because it's so all over the place. Best songs are Carousel, Egg, Stubb (A Dub), My Ass is on Fire and The Girls of Porn.

Highly recommended.

8. definately
... the self-entitled Mr. Bungle album is an underground classic. i can't really explain it, but once you listen to it a few times your threshold for musical sanity will expand.

mike patton is very talented, and the music is all over the map. if you appreciate 'Angel Dust' as an album of many different styles, then you'll be able to see that Mr. Bungle is only 'Angel Dust' but taken a step further with an entire band of like-minded talents.

'Disco Volante' is one that i still don't entirely get - although many fans will say it's their favorite. 'California' is more in line - and acessible, in relative terms.

Patton has a TON of side projects, so if you like what you're hearing you may want to check out Tomahawk and Fantomas and music with John Zorn. Fantomas' "The Directors Cut" is very cool ... bizarre remakes of famous movie themes.

FNM did break up in 1998. After Angel Dust, they released a couple more albums with a different guitarist. "King for a Day ... Fool for a Lifetime" has its moments, as does "Album of the Year".

9. Adult Themes for Voice
Famous as the vocalist of Faith No More, notorious as the singer of Mr. Bungle, Mike Patton goes one step further with a debut album of experimental sounds never imagined possible from just voice and microphone. Recorded and mixed in hotel rooms using 4-track cassette deck, Adult Themes is a classic which will both surprise and delight Patton fans and newcomers alike. Compositions such as "Catheter", and "Orgy In Reverb" live up to their titles. In addition to his successful day job, Mike Patton has moonlighted with various ensembles and composers including Kronos Quartet, Bob Ostertag, Rova Saxophone Quartet, David Shea, Arto Lindsay, Bill Laswell, Boo-Yaa Tribe, Sepultura, John Zorn and Naked City (filling in for Yamatsaka Eye).

Here are some song titles:

I Killed Him Like a Dog...And He Still Laughed

"Hurry Up and Kill Me...I'm Cold"

"Fix It So The Bruises Don't Show"

A Leper With The Face of a Baby Girl

"Pneumonia with Complications"

A Smile, A Slap In The Face, A Fart, A Kiss On The Mouth

10. see him Live!
...at all costs. check Ipecac's website, but chances are he'll be apart of a tour with one band or another in the coming year.

he sounds just as good live .... possibly better. but for him it's all about the physical energy and being extremely animated. he was singing through an assortment of mics - one of which was a gasmask.

11. Famtomas all the way baby!!!!!!
Be warned though...it's not catchy at all. It's a challenge to listen to these guys...but a fun challenge.Delirium Cordia is still my pick, but as other's have mentioned Director's Cut is very cool too.Fantomas is Patton,Buzzo from the Melvins,Dave Lombardo from Slayer (I think his drumming is even better here,if possible),and Trevor Dunn from Mr Bungle (and his own group Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant....a jazz group!).

Also, the Fantomas put on the 2nd best show I've seen all year!

I loved FNM,but have to admit I liked the old singer better.Introduce Yourself is still my fav FNM release. But Patton is a better singer, and his stuff with FNM was no bad thing at all.

Faith No More disbanded after Album of the Year was released in 1997, because of some internal dissension.

Try finding a copy of Video Croissant. It's well worth the search, since it has many of their old MTV videos and live performances - including songs from Angel Dust. Caffeine and Midlife Crisis, I believe.

I don't know what kind of "headbanger" friends you had in high-school, but Mr. Bungle is widely applauded for their musicianship, songwriting and complete insanity. There isn't a musician I've shown Disco Volante to that hasn't been astounded for one reason or other.

How can someone change everything about a song from one measure to the next and still have it sound so good?

15. Es-col-ta
The first time I head Carry Stress in the Jaw, I realized how formulaic everything I had grown up listening to had been. Within a couple of minutes of listening, a band had just destroyed jazz, thrash and about 50 other musical styles, through its spryness and perfection of all those genres.

What a sad day it was, when their breakup was announced.

20. Dunno.
Yeah, actually, there was no formal announcement per se; but the webmaster did invert the graphics on the main site, leaving some cryptic statement about the members parting ways.

I really do hope they manage to find their way back together again.

22. Those old high school headbangers
Several of my friends back there in the depths of teenagerhood are convinced to this day that American music peaked with the rise of GNR, Danger Danger, Whitesnake, etc. To think I used to play in a band with them...oy vey.

One of them moved to LA and I'm pretty sure still believes that Sunset Boulevard is heaven on earth.

So, yeah, it's not too surprising that they weren't into Mr. Bungle :-)

27. Agreed. Disco Volante is amazing
I'm surprised that some of the earlier posters said that it was almost impossible to listen too.

I think it's absolutely genius and not nearly as sophomoric as the eponymous Mr. Bungle album.

19. I love "Angel Dust".......................
I feel that it was the best FNM album. Mr Bungle was a bit too out there for me, though I did enjoy certain parts of their first album. Mike Patton's scatological predilections became a bit too much for me after that.

21. I met Mike Patton, the only man I'd want...in that way
I love FNM. I dyed my long hair maroon-streaky, and shaved the sides just like he did. So young and foolish.

I met him once. The only words I heard him say when he answered the door were, "Look out for the Italian dressing." Yes, wrapped in a newspaper, he had made a slip n slide out of the carpet in his room.

At their concert in Tampa, he had conned the Domino's delivery guy out of his delivery shirt. He hit the stage in it. Classic.

You want it all, but you can't have it.

23. die hard Mike Patton Fan
and IMHO Mr. Bungle is far better than FNM. I believe Patton started out with Bungle when he was only 18. Their albums Disco Volante and California are incredible - their first is a lil juvenile, but great nonetheless. Fantomas is another Patton project worth checking out.

30. Fantomas/Tomahawk/Maldoror
are all well worth checking out.

Bungles first release is called something like "the raging wrath of the easter bunny" and was only ever released on cassette. I'd sure love to hear it. I think it came out in 86/87. I've only ever heard the last 3, which are or course the self-titled one, Disco Volante and California...

25. "Angel Dust" is one of the best produced albums ever..
For sure for sure. It's a great great album, but the production on it is fucking phenomenal.

AS for Mr. Bungle, expect a little more zaniness rather than the straight up rock of FNM.
Disco Volante
California
Mr. Bungle

are all great, lots of variety, horns, crazy rhythms, lots of wild singing.

Go out and grab...
and here's their site: http://www.bunglefever.com/

I love Bungle. How Patton landed the gig as FNM's singer is beyond me. "angel Dust" is Faith No More's best CD, but it still wasn't indicative of how insane that guy really is.
