On top of that...

France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, USA, Greece, Austria, Thailand, China, Gran Canaria, Menorca (both Spanish owned islands I think).

And England is home.

It's easy to get around Europe from the UK, which is nice.

Germany
The Netherlands
Luxemburgh
Denmark
Norway
Sweden
Spain
Morocco
The United Arab Emirates
Saudi Arabia
Oman
Thailand
Hong Kong (when it was a British protectorate/colony/whatever)
India
Mexico

Oh, yeah, right, and the USA.

And I'm still not even remotely satisfied: There is almost all of Asia left, everywhere in South America, the ex-soviet (and soviet block) states, Australia, New Zealand, The Pacific Islands, etc etc etc. Surgeon General's Warning: travel can be as addictive as heroin.

As for visiting Egypt.... well, in my experience even many people in the Middle East think twice about that one. It is dangerous. But then so is driving, walking across the street, or flying in an airplane. It's a matter of relative risk. There are lots of other places in the Middle East to visit that are VERY interesting and as safe (or safer) to visit than places in the West (I would suggest Oman) although they don't have that cool pyramid/pharoah thing going on.But the Middle East is incredibly diverse. Given my druthers I'd be quite happy to spend less than five minutes in Saudi and even happier to spend the rest of my life in the UAE.

If you get the chance to go somewhere: GO! If you find excuses and reasons and all sortsa crap why this isn't the best time and that's not the best place, etc, you'll eventually end up regretting it. Just because you really wanna go to Egypt (which is rich with Eastern promise) don't pass up a chance to go to Canada (which is just a suburb of America? Isn't it?). Don't ignore the possibilities of travel within the US either, the state next door can be just as alien and intriguing as somewhere halfway around the world.

21. Egypt -
Having lived abroad for about 10 years - in Europe, Middle East and Africa, we have visited many many countries.

Your goal of visiting Egypt is a worthy one.

I have visited there 25-30 times - mostly on business.

Have been lucky enough to see Aida at the foot of the Pyramids.

My recommendation - head to Cairo and spend several days there - the market is worth an entire day alone.

The Cairo Museum is a second day.

If you would really like to see what Egypt has to offer, you must take a 4-5 day cruise on the Nile. It is overwhelming.

45. Haiti, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras
and Belize (?). On the way back from one of my trips to Guatemala, my plane had to make an emergency landing in Belize (we lost an engine) so we had to stay on the plane on the runway until another plane landed that was large enough to pick all 100 of us up. Does that count?

That was one of the scariest experiences because we had just been served our breakfast and the plane started shaking really hard. The flight attendants then raced down the aisle and took the trays with our uneaten breakfasts back. Then they started talking to people seated near the doors asking them if they would be able to help other passengers out in the event it would be necessary. Any time the flight attendants made an announcement they would be crying. I really thought flight attendants were trained to not show emotion/fear. Added to that, most of the passengers were Roman Catholics and they kept crossing themselves.

The pilot then made an announcement that we would be making an emergency landing in Belize instead of continuing over open ocean (thank you!)... Everybody cheered and applauded when the plane finally landed in Belize. A short while later a diverted TACA plane (way better than the crummy Eastern plane we'd been on--no wonder they went out of business) picked us up but of course they didn't have food for an extra 100 passengers. Eastern wound up giving each of us a coupon for a meal at a restaurant in the Miami Airport. So generous, huh?
