Go ahead. I dare you. Say something nice about a Republican.
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 11:40 PM by nine23
FULL DISCLOSURE:

No. I am not a freeper/lurker. Review my posts. I'm Canadian. I'm genetically programmed at birth to despise Republican Christian fundy freaks, and despise them I do. Every single one of them. As individuals. I insist they keep their distance from me, and I'd prefer it if they stay out of my country. Our air's fresh - we don't need the stink.

THAT SAID, there HAVE been moments...

For me, it was seeing Bob Dole on TV, shilling for Viagra. When I first saw the spot, I let out a huge laugh, and I seriously thought to myself: "I think America's gonna be OK..."

Of course, that was before the current "troubles", and I suppose it helped that I'd just smoked a big fat one before seeing it...but I'm sure I would've thought the same thing regardless.

Let's face it. Christian Repugs don't talk about sex, unless it's in the grossly negative, or to "shut the lib homos down". Gay sex...don't even go there. They won't even address the importance of kids "wrapping it up". They refuse to talk about it in the positive, perhaps understandably. If I was a barn-yard oddity, having sex with other barn-yard oddities, I wouldn't talk about it either. (As a Canadian, I feel I must apologise for that little outburst...I just spent an hour over at werenotsorry.com, and the imagery is overwhelming. Please forgive me.)

Further, Viagra is about bonking. Fucking. It's not a vitimin supplement. It has no "dual use", ie. aspirin: pain killer and/or anti-hypertensive. It's about fucking. For extended periods.

And yet, there was 'ol Bob Dole, on my Sony widescreen, ubiquitous pen in crippled right hand, proudly stating: (cue: Dole's gruff, serious voice; paraphrase) "Hi. I'm Bob Dole. I'm still here. Still doin' it with the missus, too. Freakin' big time. Have you tried this stuff? Well, Bob Dole here say's you should. This is better than waging war. Especially now that I'm retired and could'nt get elected to wage war anyway."

At that very moment, this life-long Republican became, at least for me...human. Sure, I know it was just a TV commercial, a marketing strategy, but that's irrelevant. He was willing to do it.

He was retired. He didn't need the money. He was still a member of the party. He was also the first major endorser of the product. It wasn't as crass as some Repug "handler", getting some dickhead senator on Jay Leno with a script in hand, saying: "Be human. Be funny. We have an image problem."

Nope. For me, 'ol Bob Dole became human that day. I think I can now relax, let down my guard, and be willing to let the old dude into my country for some fishin'. Perhaps a Canuck's game...I'd buy the beer (pot smoking optional). We'd disagree 100% on everything political, but at least I could say "How's the wife, Bob?" (nudge. nudge. wink. wink.) Compared to Rick "frothy mix" Santorum, at least it's an "opening". Some human dialogue.

I ask very little of my fellow humans, be it my next door neighbour or a high-level politician, and showing some humanity - some humility - is at the top of my list.

The reason I started this thread is to find out if there are any more examples of Repugs who, just for one brief moment, let their guards down, and showed some humility. Nothing fake, nothing transparent, nothing scripted/partisan...just a caring citizen of our planet. Doesn't have to be funny or humourous, just human.

If this thread dies for lack of examples, I understand. I sort of knew there'd be none anyway.

In the meantime, here's hoping 'ol Bob Dole is still "rockin' in his (not so free) world."

Okay, that's a rumor, but it's as well-founded as anything they said about Clinton.

he was a Republican. Yeah, I know he had problems, but I grew up watching him walking the Streets of NYC during some "hot" summers.

7. Some Republicans are good lays, as long as you don't have to talk to them
Not many, but some.

Aside from that, they taste like chicken, and should be used to end world hunger.

14. You've got to be talking about women.
Because in my experience, Republican men are dismal, selfish lovers. 'Did you have an orgasm?' Well, you know, I need more than 30 seconds... And wouldn't a guy know if a woman had an orgasm? I'll never sleep with a Republican again. Oh yeah, they LIE.

18. Yeah, women.
I wasn't going to be gender specific, not knowing much about the men in that area. Glad you could clear it up.

23. You mean some aren't, right?
I can picture Satan rubbing the back of his neck and shrugging, saying, "Yeah, W, I wouldn't go that far, but who am I to judge? By the way, your room down here is looking real good. Can't wait for you to move in. Got you next door to Ronnie and Usama. No, don't worry, not many Democrats down here. Zell Miller. We're still fighting over LBJ. Not many more."

19. There were times when I grudgingly admired Barry Goldwater
despite profoundly disagreeing with him on most issues, even fearing him on occasion. It takes balls to go to the White House and tell a President who represents your own party that you're probably going to vote guilty in his pending impeachment trial.

He also rejected the religious right wing, said that Falwell ought to 'get his ass kicked', and stood up publicly in defense of gay rights when almost nobody would dare. He was definitely a character and I miss him as an opponent.

31. Believe it or not, Republicans instituted Oregon's environmental and
land-use laws. Back when Republicans were sane.

Senator Mark Hatfield was the last of that breed. I respected him for his opposition to intervention in Central America and his support for public transit.

33. ummmm...Howard Baker
voted for him instead of a woman Democrat for Senator. He had been our Senator for some time and was a good one. Moderate, like Hatfield.
Responded with a great letter when I wrote that I was pro choice and I vote.

(also I knew the woman Democrat who challenged him and boy I was not about to vote for her! Just did not like the woman)

Oh, Yeah and Marlow Cooke, US Senator retired of Kentucky was a very good man too. (endorsed Kerry)
