What the heck is up with the IPod battery anyway???
I bought my 20 gig Ipod last year, so it's not the new one. I have a charger in my car, and the one for the home, and I swear, every time it tells me the battery is charged, I check the power indicator on the Pod and it's only half-done!!!!! Also, even if I don't use it, the battery seems to drain. WTF?

C'mon, I know there're Pod-heads out there who can enlighten me. I love me my little music machine, except for that one peccadillo. Any ideas, DU-ers?

1. According to Apple
You should only charge it when it is run down, nearly, but not completely, dead. Otherwise, the battery will not fully charge.

Here's some more info on lithium-ion batteries:

7. Haven't had a problem...unless...
....if you leave the unit connected to your WINDOWS based computer, the battery WILL DEPLETE, as the recharge utility works ONLY with MAC stuff, through the firewire. I ALWAYS keep my Ipod in its dock and it works all the time, (no running out the battery)...

13. Not true ...
I connect my iPod dock to my Windows machine using a FireWire and it does not deplete the battery. That is how I recharge it.

Perhaps I read your post wrong?

2. You should never ask the Pod people for help... you could wake up an
entirely different person.... :)

9. Yeah--But it's already changed me :-)
I bought my Pod just after I bought a brand new HP laptop with DVD burner, et all. Once I realised how cool the Pod was, I checked into other Apple stuff and was instantly sorry I didn't go Mac all the way. What was I thinking? I even play music!

But aside from that, I was told the battery thing had been fixed and a fully charged battery should last 8 hours. Hah! I've been to Europe on a few 12 hour flights and it lasts about halfway thru.

Does anyone have a new one? Does your battery work better?

11. my old 20g 2nd gen (firewire on top)
was bigger but the battery lasted a good 8 hrs easy. i have a 3rd gen 15g now i think it typically lasts a little less.

the new touchwheel ipods have a much longer battery life apparently.

did you read this one

4. I dunno...
All I know is that the battery indicator is not the most accurate measure of how much juice is left. My mini indicator reads as halfway after an hour of use but can go for about six hours total.

6. That is true.
The other day, I charge up my mini for a few hours. After I unplug it, it's only half charged. I just say screw it and leave it on my desk. The next morning, I turn it on the next morning, and its fully charged.

15. You should read that batteryuniversity article linked above ...
it explains that the problem is common in electronic devices and related to the battery indicator, not the battery itself. My cell phone does the same thing.

10. I've been using "Apple shit manufacturing" for twenty years
and have never had a significant problem (except when I dropped my powerbook, but they fixed that for free because I bought the extended service deal. Pretty incredible on their part, I'd say.)

So, from my extensive experience, I'd have to say, you are wrong in your estimation.
