6. shop for mac deals @ www.dealmac.com
They usually have the best prices listed.

Here also is a place to find best prices:

http://www.lowendmac.com/

Look for topics that say "The Week's Best Deals"

example here

7. here's my config and pricing
17 inch iMac G5, comb drive 512 MB of RAM, otherwise standard model. I didn't go for the Bluetooth nor Airport stuff--I'll add the Airport card and base station later. After Thanksgiving, I'll get the 3 year service plan, then the iSight and a game or 2 for Christmas. The Mac specialist gave me $50 off, so after expediated shipping and the Virginia sales tax, $1424. A vry very GOOD deal for such a great computer!

I did consider the Superdrive model, but I wont get y extra vacation pay until next week. I had the money saved up anyway so I went witht he combo drib=ve model.

4. Man, those are so beautiful
I loved looking at them at my local apple store. They are SOOOOOOO much cooler in person than they look on the Apple web site. You should be proud, it'll be a great computer you can use for a long time!

I've had mine for about a month and it only froze once, just this morning.

Did you get a Cinema Display too? Finally, a monitor I can lift! And the titanium color is cool too.

11. alot of rethinking
as most of you know, I was set on the iBook for quite some time. But...while it would have been very nice, I was concerned about havng a system which could have missed ut of taking full advantage of Tiger. That and the thought of my nephre alking into my room while I'm gone one day nd"losing" the iBook or worse...

So each time I used the iMac G5 at CompUSA, the more impresed I became. And I do want a widescreen dispaly with enjoy dvds on--not an HDTV, but something good and easy on my eyes.

21. Awesome Zech, mucho jealousy!
I'm still on a G4 and G3, pretending I still need to boot into Classic.

I gather from your post Tiger will require G5 to take full advantage of the new OS. Darn, that's something I hadn't thought of. Panther seems to run fine on my dualie G4.

strike up another mistake for them...or blame me for not hearing the whole story.

My bad. Thanks for the info.

But ARMPAC and Jeff Sessions are kind of scary... and I still hate Microsoft for lots of other reasons!

:argh:

15. Hey Mac Tech Peeps-- Can you help?
My cat jumped on the keyboard of my 14 in white iBook recently, displacing the left shift key. Try as I might, I can't get it back on.

What do you suggest? Any cheaper options than buying a new keyboard? I do have a service contract with MacMall, but my suspicion is that I'll pay more in shipping (and spend at least a week without my computer) if I actually try to utilize that service than if I try to solve it locally.

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide. :loveya:

19. You might try this site, they have helped me previously
It's free: http://www.allexperts.com/getExpert.asp?Category=1063

Also, MacFixIt.com is very good. They might have something regarding keys on an iBook. But I think they have become a subscription site in some areas. Not sure if that includes the archives. I know there are also iBook specfic sites. Try a Google search on that.

Good luck!

25. trade in value/
anything below a G4 won't have much of any trade in valu, but you can still try:-) Local dealers would be more open minded than say, CompUSA.

37. A Mac monger in Minneapolis gave me $125 for my vintage
clamshell iBook when I bought my new iBook.

It's strange--the new computers are so wonderful that even though I bought this new 12-inch iBook just for travel, I like it so much that I hardly ever use my desktop iMacDVD anymore.

26. how it all came about
This morning I woke up--being my first day off from work--and checked my checking account--$1900 and change :) So after my showr and geting dressed,i took a short trip to..EB Games and picked up my copy of Halo 2. and let me say, Halo 2 must be played to be believd! Especially on Live :bounce:

Then I went to CompUSA to give the iMac G5 on display a good test drive. It was the midrange model with a Sperdrive and slightly faster frontid bus. Otherwise, exac same thing as the one I ordered. When I was able to view an entire window in Safari without having to scroll over, I knew I was making the right choice. I didn't buy the Firewire cable--for $30 no way!

I returned home in mid afternoon, played Halp 2 for a few hours, and at 5:30 I called my bank (my debit card has a Visa logo, so I told them I was about to make an order with Apple and needed a spending limit increase). Then to Apple, and bingo!

Not a bad day off, huh?

32. Agreed, OS X is much more stable
Not quite as intuitive, especially at first. But if you go to VersionTracker.com they have plenty of little freeware and shareware gizmos that restore some of the missing goodies from Classic.

35. Yes, definitely get X-Assist
if you use the app switcher function in the upper right corner alot. It's weird to keep mousing up there and find you can't switch apps from that point.

Also the windows like menus, instead of hierarchical menus are annoying.

But super stable -- the only thing that crashed my OS X in two years (knock on wood) was a dvd my friend made with some weird format.

I got the order acknowldegement email from Apple this afternoon. No problesm at all with my debit card ransction--it went striahgt in without a hitch! My iMac is expected to be shipped "on or before 11/19" and since it's not loaded with the Bluetooth and other etxtras besids the added RAM, I hope it's a day or two sooner :bounce:

One teresting note--the order form said that my iMac G5 will come with a US/Japan power supply uniy. hmmmmmmm....so I CAN take it with me after all! :D
